Apologies for the double post but i'd like to thank whoever nominated this TR for talkmail - it's made me very happy and proud to see it there.

You can get your passport stamped in the tourist info center (I think it costs 3chf) but I didn't bother. As it happens my passport has been to about 8 countries and has no stamps in because UK citizens don't get stamped entering Schengen (though I think they will if you ask) and there are almost no border checks within Schengen - I would say there are none but I think they do pop up occasionally.

San Marino is off for now on account of being a pig to get to from Florence (at least by public transport). So it'll be a nice simple trip to Italy this Autumn and then some crazy route to the FT Do in Nuremberg next year... Something like LHR-Sarajevo, Mostar, Zagreb, maybe Ljubljana. And I might get the train home via Luxembourg. How are you guys getting to Andorra?

If you go to Luxembourg, you stand a very good chance of getting a border check and even a stringent customs control. When I was at the Luxembourg Opera, I took the train from Basel to Luxembourg a few times, and I regularly met the garden gnomes of the three countries you pass through, Switzerland, France and Luxembourg. Needless to say, they are probing to see if you are moving cash around between undeclared accounts. It made me realize that the borders of Europe are very much still there, even more so than before.

"Even more so than before"? Oh come on. I'm going from Austria to Slovakia on a regular base for more than 15 years now and you can't even begin to imagine how great it is to not even slow down when crossing the border. There were times in the past when we needed 2 hours to get through Slovakian customs.

Also, driving from Germany into Luxembourg I didn't even properly notice that I crossed a border.

Absolutely, and in many other border crossings, just like you describe the Austrian/Slovakian scene, you're just seeing the sign of entering another country, and just keep driving on...

You want to go where? Oct 16, 2015 8:12 pm

I found this thread looking for info on Liechtenstein. It was very informative - thanks, exilencfc!

I did find the ensuing discussion of Schengen charmingly innocent given the current migration crisis. It just goes to show how much can change in a year.
