So long to the Diesel-9... DL 2014 MSP-ATL 6-Jan-14

I just found out I placed the winning bid in the Sky Miles auction for two seats on the final Delta DC-9 flight next Monday. (And paid only 22k miles for them... a lot less than if I tried booking an award ticket on the flight!)

Stay tuned for a trip report..

I'm getting back from Europe on the 5th and have to work on the 6th. If that wasn't the case I would have tried to beat that bid. Since I didn't have a great flight and I look forward to the report!

Nice bidding, I'd forgotten about the bid else I might have tried at T-25 min. As it is, still deciding if I want to do a RT to ATL (must work Tuesday). Still tempting...

Looks like there's quite a thread over on a.net also...

I'm getting a bit worried... forecast is calling for 6+" of snow Saturday night into Sunday in STL. Looking at options including traveling to MSP on Saturday, overnighting @ ORD on Saturday or Amtrak to Chicago.

*sigh*

10:05am Saturday morning...

Text alert from AA that AA 1077 has been cancelled due to a mechanical. Have been rebooked on AA 4337 (resulting in a 4 hour layover in Chicago).

10:20 AM Saturday morning (Yes, 15 minutes later!)... AA text alert stating that AA 4337 has been cancelled. Auto-rebooked on a flight Sunday morning which won't happen due to the snowstorm.

Called reservations.. rebooked with an overnight in Dallas. Can book an SPG hotel for $75 but may ask AA to put me up. Will have to argue that one in DFW.

Had the choice of a really early AM flight or an evening flight... took the evening flight to sleep in, use the Amex Centurion lounge and hopefully standby for an earlier flight.

Itinerary:

04JAN AA 2371 STL-DFW 600p-755p

Overnight @ DFW - Hotel TBD

05JAN AA 1490 DFW-MSP 830p-1050p

Overnight @ Hilton Bloomington

06JAN DL 2014 MSP-ATL 420p-746p

Overnight @ Doubletree Atlanta Airport

07JAN AA 322 ATL-DFW 205p-340p
[AMEX Centurion Lounge DFW Visit]
07JAN AA 2212 DFW-STL 715p-850p

Saturday afternoon... 12:50pm... Text from AA.. AA2371 STL-DFW has been cancelled. (Apparently an AUS-ORD flight diverted to STL with a mechanical and the 2371 plane is being used to resume the flight to ORD)

Called reservations... nothing suggested. Finally notice there is *1* seat to MIA today.. can overnight (for close to 24 hours) and then fly to MSP Sunday night.. only other option is to hope for a quick recovery to the storm.

Itinerary:

04JAN AA 1246 STL-MIA 410p-745p

Overnight @ Sheraton Suites Plantation

05JAN AA 1621 MIA-MSP 720p-1010p

Overnight @ Hilton Bloomington

06JAN DL 2014 MSP-ATL 420p-746p

Overnight @ Doubletree Atlanta Airport

07JAN AA 322 ATL-DFW 205p-340p
[AMEX Centurion Lounge DFW Visit]
07JAN AA 2212 DFW-STL 715p-850p

04JAN AA 1246 STL-MIA
Dep: 410p (Actually 414p)
Arr: 755p (Actually 806p)

Got a 737 with the new BSI layout (777 style bins, overhead mood lighting). Full flight (no surprise!). Quite a bit bumpy on the way into MIA. FAs were asked to remain seated for most of the latter half of the flight.

Arrived in MIA. God, I LOATHE this airport. Only had one good experience and that was ten years ago. Since then - it was a construction mess for years... had my bags (as an EXP!) left off the last flight of the day to the Bahamas in a tropical storm for weight / balance reasons... forced to overnight on a mileage run in 2009 after a plane swap resulted in a six hour delay... spent 2+ hours in line for Immigration in the summer of 2012.

Maybe it's better when you are an O/D passenger which I pretty much was with an overnight stay. Nope.

The walk from D7 to the terminal exit was about 10 to 15 minutes long. Then I follow the signs down to level 1 for "Ground Transportation" where I find signs to go to level 3 for the "Miami Mover" to the Rental Car Center.

Up to level 3.. another 10 to 15 minute walk.. 5 minute train ride.. 20 minute wait for my car (I dislike Enterprise, but they were the cheapest).. 30 minute drive to the hotel.

At least the hotel is nice!

Knowing my luck with MIA... I have a bad feeling about tonight's flight to MSP. No idea what might happen... but just not too optimistic. Hope I'm proven wrong!

Since Delta is retiring the DC-9 on the 6th and the inaugaral flight of American's A321 is on the 7th, I was halfway thinking about pulling together an itinerary that would allow me to experience both. Alas, work, common sense, and the girlfriend got the better of me. At least I can live both vicariously through SFO777's report and your report. Looking forward to it.
