I've been waiting until the end of your report to comment and I must say this is one of the more beautifully photographed and nicely written reports that I've had the pleasure of reading. And what a magnificent trip! Be it on the plane or on the ground, this report was totally First Class (even though you flew in Business )! SAA looks to have an impresive Business Class, too.

I was also impresse with the state of the domestic lounges on SAA. Who knew??

Thank you for posting.
worldtraveller73, we really enjoyed the picnic, more so for the experience and ambiance rather than the food, althogh food was not bad either Apparently there are quite a few other places that offer it as well such as solms delta, ailee bleu. As with boschendal, you'll need to make reservation at least 24 hours in advance if you choose to do the picnic. Enjoy

Even SAA Y offer 34" legroom in Y compared to 31" on LH / BA or 32" on LX.

I hope to go to SA in November and will certainly ask for this grape drink. A nice visit in Salzburg is the lake district.

Great report. Thanks.

Did you visit Johanesburg?

How far is the domestic terminal from the International?

I hope to go in November so it was very helpful reading your review. I hope to stay at the Nelson.

Thanks.

Bretteee, we did visit Johannesburg for a 1 night layover. The domestic terminal and the international terminal wasn't that far from each other. We did a Soweto and Johannesburg tour. The tour of Johannesburg city center wasn't worth while, but Soweto was a bit more interesting. Most of the activities in the city center has now moved to Sandton, so if you prefer a "nicer" area, I would suggest staying in/around Sandton.

I will post a more detailed review of the Johannesburg part of the trip on my blog in the next few days if you are interested.

The drink was served with the 3 amuse bouches: smoked salmon crostini, ham with cheese, and tomato mozarella.
Did you discover Appletiser too? ^^

I did! It's really good as well but I still prefered Grapetiser Probably because our Martinelli's sparkling while tasted somewhat similar. But I could not find a Grapetiser replacement here in the US.

I also tried the white Grapetiser but again still prefered the red Grapetiser.

My wife and I just flew SAA from Nairobi to Perth via jnb in business class. Your menu from jnb to muc was the same menus we had jnb per. Also the main dishes were the same served from jnb to NBO. In fact last year in August it was the same menu served to Perth.

While the food is tasty and fresh, I wonder how often they change the menu, if at all.

I also agree that the bed is great to sleep in. I slept on average 6-7 hours on our long haul flights. I found service to be excellent on all of our flights.

Thanks for the report.

Thanks for the info on Johannesburg.

I hope to be able to also visit a gold mine and Pretoria in one day. I think there is a Tower also.

I believe that a C ticket on UA to SA is now 160,000 miles. It used to be 50% premium over Y and now it's double.

I may get a US Air credit card.

Sorry one more question.

Did you do any vaccinations / shots?

We are only going to Cape Town and Johannesburg.

Thanks.

Bretteee, we used US Airways miles which still cost 110,000 I believe for a C ticket.

If you are up to date on your vaccinations, you might be ok. I got Hep A and Hep B shots (but because I didn't realize I have not had them before). If you already have them, then you're good. They also advise you to get Typhoid shot so I got them.

You don't need any malaria pills or yellow fever for the areas that you are going to.
