I visited Pompeii & Herculaneum early last January. I felt Herculaneum was a much more interesting site. It was a fraction of the size but it seemed like you were as restricted as to what you could see like in Pompeii.

Both however are amazing sites worth checking out. We took the speed train
(pricey but worth the time you save) from Rome and went for a long day.

A couple of years back, while staying in Sorrento I took the local train to Pompeii. I got there about 3:30pm and was told admission was free at that time. I opted not to go for a guide, but just wandered around on my own-- although I did 'listen in' at various spots to some of the guides giving tours. It is truly an amazing site

To me it was the fact at how quickly Pompeii was overrun by the volcano. Those plaster casts of victims shows just how surprised they seemed to be based on their poses.

Loved the bullet train, but then got really unlucky and caught the local to Sorrento which seemed to take forever. On our return we stopped at Pompeii and then were lucky to get the express from Pompeii to Naples. Night and day difference when you don't have to stop every 30 seconds.
