United Business Class: Hong Kong to San Francisco Non-Stop B747

In January 2011, I used a systemwide upgrade to upgrade myself on the HKG-SFO non-stop flight. I was very lucky to get this upgrade, since I bought the ticket 2 weeks before it took off. This is my trip report of the experience.

The trip report in detail here:

But there are just a few points.

1) UA's food seems to be getting better. It was really not that bad at all.

2) The flight from HKG to SFO is dramatically shorter than the flight SFO-HKG. It was only 9 hours versus 14 hours!

3) They take a much more southern route returning than they do going. SFO to HKG hugs alaska coastline and comes down the eastern coast of Asia, but on the return, it seems to almost fly over the Hawaiin islands.

4) UA has a great business class hard product. I think the seat is very nice and the AVOD is just great with its large screen

I hope you enjoy my trip report:

I liked LAX-HKG on UA. Remember sitting in LD C and there
were only two other passengers. Seemed like a ghost flight
and this was during Canton Fair travel time.

Guess they scrapped that route due to low loads.

Kai Tak airport landings, lots of fun!

Great video trip report as usual ! It seems like UA food selections are getting better. The knowledge of 'physics of fluids' that I learned in high school has come back to me :D really like the way you describe how thrust works for an airplane, thanks!

FYI, as long as you hold a star alliance business class ticket, you can enter any of the SA business class lounge. The same applies for first class ticket.
For this case, you can access to 3 lounges:SQ, UA and TG :)

You have a same links with youtube video. Can you try to removed 2 of them. You have 3 links that you posted there.

I think you are brilliant TR!! I'm glad you are so enjoyable the entire trip from HKG-SFO. Are you too extremely tired that you flown a long jetlags back home.

Thank you, SFflyer123! I really enjoyed the video report. Nice explanations on how things work, and such. Novel approach.

As I'm sure you know but others may not, the time and route flying east is taking advantage of the jet stream and prevailing winds. Very common to fly just south of Alaska for many Asia to North America routes.

I'm really loving the increase in numbers of video reports over the past year. I hope you and others keep it up!

Thank you for the nice words. I totally forgot about the business class ticket getting into SQ and TG! This is great info. I always bring my *A gold card around to make sure I can get into these lounges!

Thank very much for your kind words. I do get jet lag, but I fly so much that I am used to it. It's no problem when you're always flying!

Yes, the jetstream and the tailwinds. Isn't it incredible? The tailwinds on this flight were over 100mph! Just amazing. Thank you for the comment.
