USA to India on CO, SQ, ANA, and UA with Photos

I recently completed a trip from Kansas City to Mumbai back to Denver. My home base is Colorado but I was in Kansas City when I started this trip. Airlines on this trip include Continental, Singapore, ANA, and United. Flights and hotels in this trip report include:

Trip Report Complete!

CO2914 MCI-EWR Economy Y

SQ422 SIN-BOM Business J
ITC Grand Central Hotel Mumbai (Part of the SPG Luxury Collection)
Four Points by Sheraton Navi Mumbai

UA 876 NRT-SEA First Class

24 May
Continental Express CO2914
MCI-EWR
Seat 2A
Coach – this is an RJ and only coach is available.

I arrive at Kansas City Airport and already knew that my flight was 30 minutes delayed due to a low ceilings at Newark. MCI is really a great airport when you arrive right before boarding – but not a place that’s great to hang out.

Check In: I walk up to the check in counter and am immediately told that I can check in myself at the kiosk. Ok. The kiosk as for my President’s Club Number or Confirmation Number.

Me: “How do I do this without one of these numbers? I’m on a complicated itinerary. Can you please help?”

Agent: “Just scan your Passport”

Me: “OK.” Thinking: what a great way to be treated on a ticket that costs in the 5 digits!

Me: “It says that it cannot find my reservation.” Great, what a fantastic start to a very long trip. The Agent grabs my passport and tries it himself. Still isn’t working. He sighs and takes my passport to a computer and starts typing vigorously.

Agent: “There’s an error with the interline ticket. I can’t give you a boarding pass for your Singapore Airlines flights but I can check your bag all the way to Mumbai.”

Me: “OK. Thanks” I double check the bag tag and everything looks in order. I don’t normally check bags but had more than I normally bring and did have to check this time. Really hope my bag makes it!

I go through security and find a place in the gate area to plug in my laptop and finish up some work.

Boarding begins and Star Gold are offered early boarding.

I stow my laptop bag and settle into the seat. Configuration is 1:2 but rows 1 and 2 are next to the rather large galley for a RJ so there is no seat across the aisle.

This really seems cramped for a 2 hour 45 minute flight, but I make the best of it. Surprisingly, Continental offers a free snack and a beverage! Shocking that there is free anything in coach on a domestic US airline!

We land only 15 minutes or so later than scheduled and I have 2 hours to make my way to my connecting flight. The arrival gate is Terminal C and I have to make my way out past security and take the train to Terminal B for SQ.

Singapore Airlines SQ21

Business – all business class aircraft.

I follow the signs to SQ’s check in area, which is at the far end of the check in counters. As I’m walking towards SQ, I notice that Lufthansa has pulled their ropes fully across the check in area, and the only way to SQ is to walk under the LH ropes. Typical LH….

As I walk under the ropes an SQ agent approaches me. Now, I’m still not that close to the counter. “Are you flying SQ tonight?” “Yes I am.” “This agent is available to help you.”

He escorts me to a SQ agent. She quickly checks me in and confirms that I requested a window seat in the 3rd section. “Yes, that is correct.”

Agent: “Do you know where the lounge is located? We use the SAS lounge here in Newark which is very close to our departure gate.”

Me: “No, I’ve not flown SQ from EWR before.”

Agent: “Would you like me to escort you to the lounge?” and she begins to come out from behind the counter! Ahh, what a difference from the Continental experiences. It also appears to me that she is a contracted agent – why can’t all airlines get their contracted agents to be so awesome!

I make my way to the lounge. Not the best lounge I’ve been to and not the worst. Nice that there are ample power supplies, though.

They call for boarding at about 10:30pm. Take off is scheduled for 11pm.
I make my way to the seat. First impressions are “wow, this is amazing business class!” This is the first time I’ve flown the new SQ business class. I had flown the A340-500 in the old configuration from Singapore to LAX several years ago.

I’ll now let the pictures tell the story with some commentary. Photos taken
with an iPhone.

Seat 34K upon boarding in EWR.

Flight had 58 pax. This configuration holds 100. I had heard that the 3rd section is better because it doesn't fill up. I have to agree that this was good advice as only 6 or 8 pax were in the section. Pillow and blankets very comfortable. I didn't get a shot of this as a bed, but didn't realize that the seat back folded down for the bed. At first I found this seat almost too big! Yes, I said too big! But I did get used to it. Definitely the best Biz class I've flown (compared to LH, UA (old and new), NH, TG, NW, DL, Asiana, Swiss, and Turkish). No other in my experience even comes close to this!

Singapore Sling served after take off. Delicious and nice treat (cliche maybe).

Seared Tuna Appetizer

Beef Rendang - Better than what I can get at home!

View as I settle in for sleep. What a comfy bed for a long flight.

Thanks to champagne and ambien, I wake up over Turkmenistan. Can't say I I woke up over Turkmenistan very often!

Sate and fried rice snack. Sate was ok but rice was a bit bland.

View from seat prior to breakfast service.

Fruit part of breakfast.

Nasi lemak. Flight attendant thought it was funny that I ordered all Singapore food.

Overall impression of this flight was:
1. Great seat - can't believe what other airlines are rolling out compared to this - no competition!
2. Definitely like third section
3. Did ok for the first 15 hours and got great sleep, but I was really ready to be done the final 3 hours
4. Staff was good, but I remember FAs using my name and keeping me with full water bottles (several times had to ask for water) and offering a bit more care on previous SQ flights. Granted, still better than any other airline I fly.
5. Glad I got to fly this ultra long haul flight!

Well, I seem to always have trouble posting photos to here from a public share site on Shutterfly. Appreciate any tips and I'll update with the pics.

You may want to edit that typo...SQ21 is all business-class!

I use photobucket. In every photo you upload to photobucket, there will be a link that says "embed". Copy that link and paste it right on to your FT TR.
It will work fine!

Menu for flight EWR-SIN:

Only had the champagne, which I thought was nice. Not Krug or Dom, but nice - especially in a mimosa.

What an amazing selection of tea on an airplane!

We landed in Terminal 2, which I thought was odd because I thought all A340-500 flights depart to the U.S. and all U.S. departures are from Terminal 3. I remembered that new new lounge was great in Terminal 3 and the showers were very good, with body sprays. Since I had two hours I made may way over to the lounge in Terminal 2 via the train.

At 5:30am, the lounge was almost completely empty.

What a great food spread. I wasn't hungry as I was already well fed from the flight, but did grab an espresso and some water.

The shower is a great set up and there was no one there. Sorry, no photos from the shower. I do like the body sprays, but wish they had better bath products in individual bottles. Makes me feel like I'm in a gym locker room to use the large squirt containers for shampoo and I didn't carry my own due to liquid restrictions.

Upon leaving the lounge, I asked about walking back to Terminal 3, which is where the connect flight to BOM was departing. The agent said it took a half hour and I just did not have enough time. I could have used the walk and will have to keep that in mind for next time.

My apologies for the picture problems - not sure why the are sideways here but look OK on photobucket. Also, these were taken on an iPhone, so the quality is not the best. In any event....

26 May
Singpapore Airlines SQ422
SIN-BOM
Seat 12K
Business Class

Boarding was on time for the connecting flight. The cattle pen at Changi after security but before boarding is annoying. It is definitely the great class equalizer though - no matter your class of service you're stuck in the holding pen.

I boarded and was shown to 12K, first row, bulkhead. I was surprised that this was a window seat as I always book an aisle. The flight attendant told me this wouldn't matter because there was no one booked to sit next to me. This was the 772 version of the 777 on Seatguru. The seats seemed newish, and were angle flat in a cream leather. They were fine for the 5 hours to Mumbai, but way short of the new Business Class on SQ.

After 26 hours of travel by this time that was proceeded by an intense two days of meetings, I didn't take as many pictures as I like. Here are a few (and a couple didn't turn out at all).

Lots of room to stretch out in the bulkhead and nice sized screen.

Breakfast fruit. My assitant tried to Book The Cook for Lobster Thermidor but was told this was not available on this flight.

So luxurious to have a cappuccino mid flight!

ITC Grand Central Hotel Mumbai
Upgraded to a suite on arrival (SPG Platinum)

Arrival in Bombay was fairly painless, but luggage did not come out with priority tags first, as I have come to expect on most non-US *A carriers.
I walked out into the Mumbai heat and began to look for my name amongst the crowd, which was fairly small compared to my experience arriving in Hyderabad last year. Maybe it was the time of day (mid morning) with few international arrivals that made the difference. My arrival in Hyderabad was primetime for international arrivals.

I didn’t see my name. I thought this could be a problem given the correspondence with my team in Mumbai and some confusion about my arrival. Thankfully, I noticed a representative from the ITC Grand Central Hotel holding a sign for the hotel. He didn’t have me on his arrivals sheet, but after a quick phone call confirmed that I did have a reservation. He made another call and arranged for a car to take me to the hotel. The car took about 15 minutes to arrive. The agent tried to get me to wait in the terminal, but I was enjoying the late morning sun and heat after such a long trip (and such a long winter back in Colorado – spring never seemed like it was going to come this year!).

The car was a slightly used Honda of some kind. The air conditioning did work well and the driver indicated it would be over an hour to get to the hotel.

The hotel arrival required the standard security checks of opening the trunk (some places require opening the hood as well, but they didn’t require this at the ITC Grand Central) and looking under the vehicle with a mirror mounted on wheels with a long handle to make it easy for security to inspect the vehicle. They also had some type of sniffer device that the diver explained was used for explosive detection. The thing looked pretty beat up and I wondered how effective it was.

After inspection, they opened the gate and allowed the vehicle to pull up the small and cramped central drive. The bell person (well, seemed like there were about 3 guys helping) grabbed my luggage and put it thru the xray machine. I walked thru the magnetometer, was hand wanded (they did this each time, regardless of whether or not I set off the alarm) and allowed me to enter.

The lobby was light and airy with the standard flower arrangement on the central table in the center. Check in counters were to the right of the entrance. I handed the agent my passport, credit card, and SPG card. They did not have my SPG on file and after furious typing, photocopying, and numerous phone calls, they indicated that they needed just 5 more minutes to prepare a suite for me. OK, I’ll wait.

After just a few minutes, I was escorted up the elevators to my room. I’ll let the pictures do the talking now:

Living room

Massage chair in living room – this was a really nice and unexpected feature

Powder room at entry way

Coffee/tea/minibar

Bedroom

Chair and flatscreen in bedroom

View

Bedtime ritual set out each night. I did not partake

Eye mask, ear plugs, and room scent at bedside

What you have to clear off the bed each night before hopping in.

I guess I forgot pictures of the regular bathroom. The regular bathroom has a separate shower from the tub and the tub has a view into the bedroom thru a window, which has an electric shade should you wish privacy. There is also a huge closet with safe that serves as the hallway from the bedroom into the bathroom.

Overall, I enjoyed the suite.

Food in the hotel was good, and I tried both the Indian and Asian restaurants or room service from them. Cookies with the coffee service were always well stocked which was a nice touch.

Pool: I did not like the pool area at this hotel at all. Its all indoors with one end sticking outside with a bird net over it. There is a small children’s pool at the other end that is actually outside. I was really hoping for a more lush, tropical feeling with poolside service for a beverage. If that’s what you want, stay elsewhere. The locker rooms also have a sauna, steam, and whirlpool. I tried them and really did not enjoy them either.

Gym: The gym is adequate, with Life Fitness equipment (elliptical, bike, treadmills), free weights, and some weight machines. Lots of cold bottled water on supply.

Car Service: The service offered by the hotel was fine, but a bit pricey. I would recommend going with a car rental services and have the car at your disposal for the entire day.

Spa: Didn't use it, but looked pricey for India.

This was a work trip and I would stay here only for work again (or maybe if I wanted to burn some SPG points). If I were coming to Mumbai as a tourist or wanted to stay somewhere over a weekend between work, I would definitely stay somewhere else. I stopped by the Taj Palace and it looked fantastic. I’d probably stay there if I come again.

Thanks for the TR. I stayed at the ITC as well, the breakfast buffet is great. I'm surprised SQ didnt have a better wine/spirit list.

Wow!!! Great job for your writing the trip reports & including the photos, too. You took on SQ from EWR-SIN nonstop on operating A340-500 aircraft. Gosh! It was such very long journey to Singapore. I am never been flown on ULH flight before. I could considering to try get on Airbus A340-500 nonstop from LAX-SIN or BKK.

Thanks for the TR; I'd like to take SINEWR someday for the sheer novelty of it, but I can imagine that after the first 15 hrs you're just ready to be off the plane.
