Wink The Simple Trip Report: BKK, NRT, HK, MUC, LH F (FCT!), TK F Suites, TG F (Pics!)

Yeah, yeah, yeah, I still need to finish the Iraq trip report (hasn't been forgotten, BTW), but because I recently returned from trip to Bangkok, Tokyo, Munich, Hong Kong, and Istanbul with heaps of pictures, stacks of menus, and reams of text in my head, I figured I'd better get typing on this one, just to keep the detail alive.

You can read about the rationale in the opening sections, including why this report has been dubbed The Simple Trip Report.

Enjoy, read if you want, don't read if you don't want, but let's try to keep the excessively negative comments about trip report timing, elsewhere. Criticize the writing and quality (or lack thereof). Both reports will get done, at some point, and I don't think the world stops spinning because they might take a while. I'll try my best to have one segment a day (I pre-wrote a bunch, this time), but please forgive me, with another round of midterms, final exams, and the MCAT looming, if there happens to surface a brief delay.

We're reviewing it all: flights, hotels, and destinations, with plenty o' text, pics, and flippant humor.

With that, have at it:

Prologue: The Genesis of the Simple Trip Report

Part 1: Planning: Or, How I Learned to Delete Crucial Flight Segments and Think they Still Existed

Part 2: Lufthansa First Class Lounge, JFK

Part 3: JFK – Frankfurt (FRA) on Lufthansa

Part 4: Frankfurt First Class Lounge, FRA – London Heathrow (LHR) on Lufthansa

Part 5: LHR – Istanbul (IST) on Turkish Airlines

Part 6: Rapid Exploration of Istanbul

Part 7: IST – Hong Kong (HKG) 0n Turkish Airlines

Part 8: Hong Kong Foray, Too Late for Dim Sum, and with No Skyline in Existence

Part 9: HKG – Bangkok (BKK), on Thai Airways

Part 10: Arrival in Bangkok, Review of Hilton Millenium Bangkok;

Part 11: Day One in Bangkok;

Part 12: BKK – Shanghai (PVG) – Tokyo (NRT) on Thai Airways and All Nippon Airways;

Part 13: It’s Raining Yen, Hallelujah – Tokyo Madness (with bonus text and photos of my January trip!)

Part 14: Review of the Hilton Tokyo, (plus bonus review and photos of the Conrad Tokyo, from my January trip!)

Part 15: NRT – BKK on All Nippon Airways (the Durian flight)

Part 16: Bangkok, Day Two

Part 17: BKK – Munich (MUC) on Thai Airways, Including the (what turned out to be) very, very, very overhyped Thai Airways first class lounge and spa

Part 18: Arrival in Munich, a Bavarian Day in Munich, with beer, sausages, and the BMW factory

Part 19: Review of the Hilton Munich City

Part 20: MUC – Frankfurt (FRA) on Lufthansa

Part 21: No, You Can’t Use Our Phone – Review of the Hilton Frankfurt (preview: consider solidly not staying there)

Part 22: FRA – Detroit (DTW) on Lufthansa, including the oh-so-fun First Class Terminal

Part 23: No Crew, No Brotherly Love – DTW – Newark (EWR) on Continental Express, Plus Wrap-Up, and Final Thoughts.

Take your time! Good luck on the MCAT (from a German med student who took USMLE Step 1 recently)!

The best reports are the ones that take time to write. Looking forward to yours - it promises to be a lot of fun to read.

Part 1, Live!

Gracias, folks. Appreciate the understanding.

I took the organic chemistry exam this morning (or, perhaps, I should say, it took me), and then finished up Part I. Click here, or see the OP.

I am glad to see that we have other science medicine brains on this forum at least i know am not alone..... keep up the report it is really good! i might be doing my first TR this coming may, am still debating since i have a problem holding a camera taking pictures but will give it my best shot
It is interesting that LH is offering gate security/gate escorts from the numerous trips that i had taken on JFK-FRA/MUC never had that..is it something new that they are offering\?, certainly a nice touch since security 4-630pm is crazy at Terminal 1 major congestion

Thanks for the excellent report!

I have a question. You mention that the JFK lounge's F section does not open until 3 PM, but you went upstairs at 2 PM and ate there. Did you mean you went up at 3 PM to eat?

Great stuff so far - can't wait for more

I can totally relate to the security checkpoint anxiety. I've slowly gotten better, but there's just no way to do it elegantly. (Note to self: ALWAYS travel wearing slip-on shoes.) Though having travelled with a very infrequent travelling friend a couple of weekends ago, I realized just how far along I've come in my journey towards super-efficient navigation of security check obstacles - despite no queue, he took a solid 10 minutes to get through. That's 10 minutes that could have been spent sampling the unparalleled joys and extravagant opulence of the US Airways Club at BUF...

It's simply not going to be ever finished, as it seems now.

I actually have two trip reports to finish - this one, and the Iraq trip report. My apologies - studying for the June 17 MCAT. Trip reportin' may have to take a lesser venue to finding admission into a four-year, accredited med school. Sadly.

I gather the June 17th date of the MCAT must've taken you by surprise or you would have never started this trip report. It's so frustrating when that happens. Good luck on the MCAT.

He he.
Not that I can't live without your, say, "reports", but starting something without finishing it, is so... unmanly :-), isn't it?
