Tequila - Shots
 

My beverage of choice when I am upgraded to first class is Tequila - shots! And I have frequent upgrade on AA, UA and NW. I have consistently noticed and experienced hesitation to offer me a second, third shot unlike fellow passengers who are are offerred wine, beer and mixed drink refills, w/o hesitation.

I would rather sip Tequila than any other beverage and I am very knowledgeable of the effect of T so I am very conservative and cautious. But the look of FAs when I request a shot is of utter horror and trepidation.

Wondering if any other Tequila fan has similiar experience?

Perhaps it's the way you order it? Instead of asking for a "shot of tequila", try asking for a "tequila, please, neat".

I'm not so sure it's about the tequila. I think it's the FA in question. Because they don't all happily serve that second, much less that third, glass of wine. It just seems to go by the person serving you. I have seen some FAs who would be happy to hand over the entire bottle of wine -- and some few FAs who I can tell distinctly disapprove of serving a that second glass of wine. I'm a shy person (giggly and silly by nature) so some of them may feel that it's better to err on the safe side and assume I've had enough?

I got a hostile vibe from one DL FA and later heard her talking about her religious beliefs to the other FA so that particular lady probably felt that women shouldn't be drinking in public at all. Fortunately, that's one FA one time, so I just let it roll off...

I like the advice to ask for "tequila, neat, please." But then you get into the discussion with those who don't know what "neat" means...

Also, on NW and DL, the catering is getting kind of bad. Is the hesitation because they have LIMITED servings of tequila and worried about running out? On at least one recent flight, I suspected that the hesitation came because there was like one bottle of white wine left by the time I ordered seconds and probably three other people hoping to share it. On another flight I ordered one of those margaritas and it seemed to be quite an ordeal to get the pieces in order so it could be mixed up.

I doubt it. I've consumed all the minis of my beverage of choice on many a flight from FAs quite happy to serve and quite happy to switch to plan B when plan A ran out. It sounds to me very much like a bias against tequila shots. Order them neat and move on is my best suggestion. Getting upset about it isn't going to help.

Since when does UA serve tequila?

You should become a Mexicana or AeroMexico FF. Maybe use Mexico City as your hub ;). As many of the free shots you want

I was wondering the same thing about AA.

And if they did, I'm not sure AA would serve something I'd want to sip, but rather mix.

That would leave NW (who is now DL) ... do/did they ever serve Tequila?

I've asked for tequila on UA a few times and been told they don't board it..

I'm guessing that the looks you get are because tequila is not available?

Yep, doing “shots of tequila” sounds like the makings of a Girls Gone Wild video.

My thoughts were along that line a bit as well. Drinking tequila shots has a college-ritual stigma attached ("What do you want next, a Jager bomb? Or do you want me to whip up a Long Island Tea for you?")

In places like Tijuana, FLL or many college towns you also have places catering to younger crowds selling optional "floaters" with drinks (as the drinks by themselves won't get time-pressed students drunk quickly enough).

Even in Bangkok tequila shots are a drink of choice when someone rings the bell to buy a drink for all the girls (/boys/katoeys) in go-go places (or so I'm told). And they wonder why some workers later have problems with alcohol.

None of which may apply at all to the OP's situation, but I think the drink just has a get-drunk stigma attached.

(Speaking of other planks of the college ritual, does anyone over 30 still drink/like Captain Morgan?)
