Suggested improvement: Flying Camera
 

Probably not gonna happen anytime soon, if at all.

Still, it would be nice if UA adds "flying camera" next time they update their fleet or buy new aircraft.

Flying camera, ala EK allows one to tune into various cameras (forward, down etc.) on the IFE and enjoy the view from the pilot's perspective, or just to look down over whatever your passing.

...would make those SF flybys more fun :-)

Of course it would be at the captain's discretion. ;)

The best camera I have experienced is on South African. Mounted high on the tail gives a great view esp. during takeoff & landing...

I believe we don't do this in the US as a legacy of AA191. At the time, AA had TV for takeoffs and landings with a forward camera. I think it's probably time to move on from that incident of over 30 years ago.

The tail mounted camera on Qantas' A380 fleet is pretty nice. With the nose & wings visible it becomes a cool attitude indicator. Although UA could trump them by playing Channel 9 audio with the aircams.

Not sure if it was AA191 or DL191 (both are flights that crashed), but I believe I've heard that one of them had a forward looking camera that was projected to the bulkhead movie screens. The pax could see their impending doom, thus ending in flight cameras for US carriers. I don't understand the logic as I think many on-board would have 'seen it coming' anyway.

My googling isn't coming up with anything verifying this though so maybe I've made this up or it's an myth.

Ha! When I saw the thread title, I was thinking of an in-cabin camera like public busses have.

The last time I flew Austrian (OS) tatl several years ago, they had these cameras. You could choose your view. I believe it was down to the right, left, or straight ahead. I watched the entire flight even when there were only clouds. This would be a nice complement to ch. 9.

And I was thinking of someone letting go of their camera in turbulence...

That's exactly why. And we need to move on. Post-haste.

When people keep saying "move on", I can't tell if they mean that we should stop discussing as a possibility, or that the crash is significantly in the past that we should stop looking backwards.

I was certainly in the latter camp and I suspect that the others were as well.

I love the front wheel camera on some NH birdies - givens an eerie view to the runway in some cases.
Entirely agree. There is zero logic to this from a safety point of view. If the lack of cameras would have somehow meliorated the accident, only then this would have been an argument.

Hmmm...I didn't know there was an incident that killed the in-flight cameras...kind of sad to see the legacy still linger on.

Did UA ever had such cameras in the past?

Agree with the earlier posters that this and channel 9 would make the perfect enthusiast combo :-)

The nose cam is one of my favorite reasons for flying the SK widebodies. They have a front view and a down view which are great during takeoff and landing.
