Baggage allowance

Thanks for all the great info in the forums. I was wondering if anyone can help me clarify a baggage question regarding a trip from CLT to CPT on NWA.

I booked the flights through cheaptickets.com and I fly CLT-ATL on Delta, ATL-JNB on Delta and then JNB-CPT on South African Airways. All 3 flights show up on my NWA itenary but NWA are saying that I will be subject to SAA's domestic baggage restrictions on the JNB-CPT leg, which is a lot less than the international allowance on Delta. Is this correct?

Thanks

Welcome to FlyerTalk!

Are you spending any time in JNB before connecting on? If not you should be able to have the agents at CLT check your bags all the way through to CPT and not have to pay extra. If you do something like overnight in JNB and then check back in the next morning then you'll have to pay as you check them in with SA.

We are not spending any time in JNB but we have to clear customs in JNB and collect our baggage and recheck them for the domestic flight.

You answer might very well be on your ticket reading from this advise:

To comply with Health & Safety requirements and in line with current practices, South African Airways has introduced
a maximum weight limit for single items of hold baggage.

South African Airways will no longer accept any single item of baggage that exceeds 32kg/70lbs in weight, except for
certain exceptions (see footnote i) below).

The new policy relates only to single items and does not affect your overall baggage allowance, as shown on your
ticket,
which remains unchanged.

Ugh. Is this true that bags need to be collected in JNB before moving on to CPT? I have a similar itinerary in October and was wondering the same thing. I am flying AF from JFK-CDG-JNB and then on SAA from JNB-CPT after a 1:45 layover.

I have flown into JNB many times and I always have to collect bags, clear customs then make your way to the domestic terminal and recheck them.

Thanks for the heads up. How strict have you found SAA regarding carry-on bags (both for size and weight)?

They have been pretty forgiving, I took a 49 linear inch carry on and it was never given a second look.
