Upgrades at hotels

I'm just getting into the FF game, thus having to stay at hotels.

I read an article about people in Vegas tipping a 20 to the check in clerk at the hotel, and getting upgrades. Does this work outside Vegas, in Manhattan?

Are there any tips for receiving upgrades for hotels here?

Yes, but as you're building your way to that...

We've had a number of threads on tipping to get upgrades. Here's one which discusses the topic and refers to how to find other threads about it (see posts 7-8, etc). If you want to discuss that aspect, please feel free to join one of those threads.

As far as how to get status faster, some chains may offer a "fast-track" to elite promotion. Also, if you have multiple stays planned at one or a few properties, get to know the front office or rooms manager and let the manager know that you'll be a frequent guest.

the $20 trick definitely works - at least it worked for me at the Excalibur.

hahaha

but i doubt it works in manhattan though...i guess you just have to be a member of the chain and smile your way through...

that's what got me an upgrade to a suite in toronto for Le Royal Meridien King Edward despite only just joining their programme

ymmv though...
