US Cities ranked by number of nonstop intercontinental destinations

Was just thinking about which cities have the most nonstop international destinations.

My thinking seems to be:

NYC
ORD
ATL
LAX
MIA
IAD
IAH
SFO

I was surprised to see IAH ahead of SFO but that it was the count off the top of my ahead suggest. Although its mostly due to short flights to south america.

Is this an official list or what you think is true?

I would think LAX would be #1 or #2.

I'm confused, too. Did you make this list up, did you get it from somewhere, or was it generated by some sort of objective process?

This doesn't surprise me terribly. The only thing I would say is that lumping together EWR and JFK will put NYC to the very top of the list. I daresay that those two airports on their own would each be in the top five.

How can you be surprised by something you made up based on what you think?

Thank you for perfectly expressing what was also on my mind.

Slightly less casually, I tried to count unique intercontinental nonstop destinations from Wikipedia, including including all seasonal destinations and routes listed but not yet started or scheduled to end, but ignoring final destinations of direct flights. However, I did not check every case where I suspected a flight was direct instead of nonstop, which may lead to overcounting for JFK and DTW.

JFK - 73
ATL - 46
EWR - 38
LAX - 34
IAD - 32
MIA - 29
ORD - 24
SFO - 21
IAH - 17
DTW - 11
DFW - 10

I am surprised that JFK is on top since my impression is that they have fewer flights to Europe the last few years. From Washington I used to frequently find good flights to Europe out of JFK, but recently I have had better luck out of IAD.

AC operate 73 intl detinations out of YYZ, I suspect the total # of intl destinations is probably close to 95

And we need to know this because? Just curious...what purpose does it serve? We will still fly out of our respective airports and fly into and out of air airline's hubs to make connections and avoid at all costs airports we hate. Mine being EWR. No 37 for take off...yeah right.

given that your list goes down to 10 at DFW, me thinks PHL should be on there somewhere.

I think there's value to knowing how many destinations you can fly to, non-stop, from an airport. It's one thing I love about living in Chicago--I almost never have to make a connection. (In the last 10 years I think I had 3 connecting flights--to Victoria, BC, Casablanca and Halifax, NS.)

But intercontinental is a bit of strange way to look at it, since it presumably eliminated all international destinations in Canada, Mexico (and possibly other parts of Central America) as well as the Caribbean.

Definitely. I count at least 19 from PHL.

Also left off the list is BOS. I count at least 13 from BOS.

I didn't claim my list was comprehensive, I just tried to illustrate some major hubs. SEA has about a dozen overwater routes, MSP around 5, DEN 2, and PHX a shiny 1.

i just looked and see 9 going and two coming in.
op said intercontinental, nonstops, so i don't think canada, mexico/central america, and Caribbean count.
