Useful list of things to say when asked to switch seats |
(Assuming I'm in E+ or E on another airline) Unless you're trading a seat in business or first class, I'm not interested in moving.
Seriously, I would--and have--trade for another aisle seat in E+ unless it's a bulkhead seat, which I don't like. But I'm not going to give up an aisle for a window or--horrors--a middle seat. |
The way you say it is the most important thing
when i say my "no thank you , i don't want to move" it's in a polite professional tone but with enough assertiveness and associated body language to say "i said it nicely but please don't ask again cos ill rip your head off and sh@t down your neck" |
1) NO.
2) No, sorry, but I went through a lot of trouble to get this seat. 3) Sure, how much are you willing to pay me? |
"Thank you for the offer, but no, not for less than $500 cash."
This actually has resulted in $500 cash on one occasion. The guy really wanted to switch seats for a mere 90 flight up to the Bay Area. |

On occasion its worth it to move. I was flying FLL-IAD last month, and was in the 1st row of Y. This minor (maybe 8-10 yrs old) got the ticket next to me, but her mother was sent back. She had the FA ask me If I'd be able to move for her to be with her son, and I could see this was going to happen from the moment they got on the plane, so I was even prepared a little for it. I just was polite, voiced a little concern because I had work to do and needed space, which is why I chose the 1st row aisle seat, blah blah blah. Basically I was pretty comliant, and not a PITA while doing it, (the FA requested me to, not the pax), and she then just bumped me up into F. 30 seconds later, have my laptop out of the overhead, and now in my F seat, "would you like something to drink, sir?" Meh moving I guess wasn't too bad

Kudos to you for holding your ground. |
I do switch with people if the switch is to another aisle seat -- I just did that between LHR and CPH or also between BOS and LHR, but they were to comparable business class aisle seats in both cases. So, I don't start out with a no, because I also sometimes ask if I'm traveling with a colleague and we somehow aren't sitting together. But, again, I would never ask someone to switch to what I think of as a worse seat.
|
-"My apologies, but no thank you"
-"Is there any particular reason why you would like to change seats?" -"May I see your BP? Just to check where you sit" -"Its a pleasure to do so. But why should I?" -"Maybe on the next flight when we meet again?" |
Mande? (Warning: may not work on flights to/from Mexico)
"Okay, I'll change. But only if we change right back. I really don't want to sit there after take off." :D Best response is just being honest- "Sorry, I really wanted an aisle seat to stretch my legs. Can you please ask someone else?" |
I'm sorry, but I'd prefer not to.
I've only actually ever turned anyone down once, and it was a switch from a comfy row 6 window on a UA 757 to a row 1 aisle. No go. Usually, on a like-for-like switch, I have no problem. No one has had the chutzpah to ask me to switch to an inferior seat besides the case above, yet. |
I've always acquiesced to a seat-switch request, figuring that if someone actually has the guts to ask, that they must have a good reason. Plus, I'm 5'4" (so the legroom argument is out), I usually travel by myself, and I guess I would just feel pretty uncomfortable saying no
"just because," especially to an older person . . . I've only asked to switch once that I can remember - to sit next to my sister on an ATL-SNA flight last Thanksgiving. We were one row apart and on opposite sides of the plane, in coach. The woman I asked said no, which surprised me at the time (probably because I blindly assumed that she would react the way that I would) - a couple seconds later, though, another guy in the row offered to switch with me. I don't know what this all says about me - probably that I'm too much of a first child and need to learn to stand up for myself - but for now, at least, if you ask me nicely and have a reason for wanting to switch, I have no reason not to make your day a little better . . . |

I would also add that I would want to verify/assess my potential seatmate...being a man at 6'3" and 250+ lbs, I don't want to get stuck next to another "me" in Y. |
