Checking in Alcohol
i read a number of posts about packing wine, but still am unsure if Alcohol bottles can be checked in with proper packaging. Is this legally allowed across the board ? thank you.

wine is acceptable in usa, also on aa us and ua website. however, i have had problems with the ignorance of the regs from ua and aa gate agents. would recommend you go to the airline website and print the limitations.
in the usa, the box will most likely be inspected. |
Anything over 140 proof is considered hazardous according to the FAA. Otherwise you should be OK if it is well packed and not too heavy.

In the US, at least some states have laws prohibiting private individuals from bringing alcoholic beverages into the state, those these laws seem to be little known and I don't know if they're often enforced.

I bring back my favorite rum from the islands whenever I go. I wrap it carefully, and put in my suitcase. Never a problem.
I also bring back micros for Mr. P1, sometimes a 6pk or 2. Again, wrapped carefully. I think the limit for hard is supposed to be 2 bottles, but I've never had any taken. |

That is a customs issue and the limit is what can be brought in duty-free, not necessarily a limit on what one is allowed to check. The limit coming into the USA is 1L of hard liquor, IIRC.
Alcoholic beverages- 24 to 70 percent by volume (48 - 140 proof) * Covers most alcoholic beverages * Limited to 5 liters (1.3 gallons) per passenger Alcoholic beverages more than 70 percent by volume (140 proof) are not permitted onboard the aircraft. this is on the ua site. you will find a similar one on aa. you can also find it on the TSA site. 1.3 gal is about 6 or 7 bottles. |

Here's the TSA's version of the above numbers. |
