Passengers, especially very frequent flyers are on to the game. When we're told 45 minutes before landing that 'we're at the altitude where portable electronics must be shut off', we just don't buy it. When it we're told that GPS devices are 'outlawed' by the FAA, it makes people question every 'rule' that is quoted.

well said (this is much like the boy who cried wolf, isn't it?)

I've seen many torn seat back pockets from weight of laptops. My favorite incident was someone during boarding got their laptop out, stuffed it into the pocket which ripped and he laptop fell to the floor with a loud thud and broke the display off.

[Unduly personalized text deleted by moderator] It's no fun being hit by a "light" laptop when it flies around the cabin during turbulences. Also, 4.7 lb laptop is far from being "light" -- it's about 3 times heavier than the one I'm using right now for leisure travel.

True, but we didn't always have cell=phones, lap-tops, roller-bags, etc. At one time there were hat-racks, small briefcases and that's about it for carry-ons.

Rules have increased as our lives have evolved thus MORE rules. Since the advent of cabin safety studies which started in the 50's (the jet age really) it was always a rule that "all service items furnished by the operator be collected prior to landing"... that's an FAR. It has always been an FAR that seat-backs be up and locked.

From a cabin-safety perspective I really only see security related issues as having changed. Maybe that means you can no longer stand and wait for the FWD lavatory etc but many of these rules have always existed, personally I just didn't find people as brazen in challenging all of them.
