Coach Seating Comparision?
 

I am looking at flying to London from Chicago.

3 options are..

United on 767-300
Virgin on A340
British Air on 777

Which would have the better coach seating? Is the upgrade to Economy Plus or a similar plan (World Traveler Plus on BA/Premium Economy on Virgin) worth it? Two kids (9 and 8 yrs old) might be coming...does that change the upgrade value?

Also... I might have to fly direct on the way back from LHR to SFO. Aer Lingus is by far the cheapest way to go with one stop. How is their A330 service?

E+ on UA is hardly worth it - seat pitch increases by only 4" with the same width. But, the price differential is not so much.

On BA, you get 7 inches of pitch, one inch of width, and two more inches of recline, but the price differential from economy minus can be pretty big.

Virgin PE has the same pitch as BA, but a much wider seat. IIRC, the price differential is the largest of the three referenced carriers.

Price vs comfort is a personal choice. I'd lkely buy the cheapest seat and use the savings to splurge in London if I could not use miles to get nto business class.

But I am not that tall. If you are very tall or very heavy, the economy plus options take on value. E+ on UA for one who fits into a narrow seat is not a bad deal.

The extra recline on BA may be worth something if you have difficulty sleeping on an airplane. Since the person in front of you also has that extra, you will appreciate the extra ptch.

I have only flown Virgin's E+ product. It really depends upon your own needs and the actual price. I was able to get a pretty good deal on E+ myself, since I was flying off season.

for me, the seat width is the biggest deal. In that respect it was incredibly more valuable. I would not have been able to stand that long a flight if I had a normal economy seat, and a full aircraft. Then again, if you are lucky enough to get an empty row, then you can always stretch out in Economy. United's E+ is legroom only, so I don't think it is worth too much.
