That is pretty crazy. Don't know if I'll get to see the airport when I'm there (not for another year and a half or so).

I don't know how long the runway is on St Thomas, but I spent an afternoon in the Crown Bay port watching small planes take off and immediately bank over the cruise ship I was on. I coudn't help thinking that one of these days one of those planes could have an engine problem and end up crashing into the cruise ship.

The cruise ship never moves? ;)

I thought of GIB and it's in there.

BRR didn't seem that bad when we did the do out there, but it is certainly unique - and a fantastic experience :)

There's also Lukla, gateway to the Khumbu.

On a bad day there's no service from KTM at all, as it's a visual approach ONLY airfield. On a good day it's get as many flights in and out as quickly as possible before the afternoon clouds roll in.

Wow, that's a pretty amazing airport! I'm planning on going to Bhutan next year. Maybe I can figure out a way to stop there. I'm beginning to think that it would be fun to start making a point of landing at all these places, just for the fun of it!

SFO Airport

I am surprised they left SFO off. When you start to land you go so low over the bay and you clear the Dumbarton and San Mateo bridges along with the winds or rain and on a dark night it can be scary. When I was young before I even knew how the operations worked at SFO I was scared when we came so low over the bay. I was amazed how the aircraft even landed.

Continental Micronesia's Island Hopper

Made the Island Hopper trip a few years ago. The GUM/HNL take-off's/landings were no problem, but take-off/landing at Chuuk (Truck), Pohnpei, Kosare, and Kwajalein made you wonder if there was enough room to land/take-off. While straight-in approaches/take-offs, the runways are limited by the size of the islands. When landing, you see nothing but water until the brief moment before touchdown when you see the runway. Take-off is similar, as soon as you feel the aircraft become airborne, you're over the end of the runway/ocean. Talked to the pilot during the brief (hour) layovers and he said it gets a little tricky with wind/rain.

My vote is for Telluride, CO.

9000', mountain crosswinds and one of those "we'll be in the air at the end, whether we're flying or not" runways.

How come no one has mentioned the old HKG without a doubt the best reason to fly to Asia

Obviously it moves :), but it sure wouldn't be getting out of the way in a hurry if something happens. And I'd guess there's a sizable percentage of days when there's 1 or 2 ships at that port. And a lot of the traffic was smaller planes, which I'd worry more about having problems than large ones. It's just one of those things that just kinda struck my mind watching them take off and bank right overhead.

I was going to mention that and Courchevel...I see others beat me to it. Not flown into/out of CVL but my father has several times. He didn't like skiing so went flying instead.

Am surprised to see JFK there (and SFO mentioned here), plenty of airfields have large expanses of water at the end of the runway(s) and I wouldn't consider them necessarily as dangerous; HKG, LAX, SIN, LCY (perhaps), OAK (yes, but not because of the airport ;)) are a few that spring to mind.

Been to 6 of the ones on the list and the others one listed on this thread.

.... most of the ones mentioned aren't anywhere close to as bad as some of the other airports I've gone into and out of.

LGA's a pretty weird approach too....one time I flew in from Montreal, it circled Manhattan before turning back toward the airport.

My thoughts exactly. And I watched the whole thing through the windshield, since the plane just had a little curtain separating the flight deck from the passengers - a curtain they didn't close.

Anyone remember the old Kai Tak airport in HKG? That landing was a trip also. Coming down over the apartment buildings low enough to see what people were having for dinner! Then a sharp right bank and on to the runway.

About once every year or so a China Airlines flight would skid off the end of the runway and into the harbour.

Chep Lap Kok is really boring in comparison.
