What about the trains at MCO?

Por favor, manténganse alejado de las puertas.

p1cunnin Jun 30, 2008 7:35 pm

SFO has the landside trains that shuttle between terminals (arguably, the inner loop trains) and out to the parking lots and rental cars.

TPA has the MCO-style shuttles.

PIT has the DEN-style shuttles.

IAD has the infamous people-movers, which will eventually be replaced by trains.

I'm all about walking when I have a layover or after a long flight. No trains/trams/shuttles for me, thanks.

Some of the Mobile Lounges at IAD will continue to be used indefinitely, even after the new Aerotrain system starts operating in 2009. Primarily they will be used to transport international arrivals to Customs & Immigration.

The new train system, still under construction, is quite interesting. Being all underground it was built with a combination of cut-and-cover and tunneling. A good description of the system, with some photos, is at http://mwaa.com/_/file/_/aerotrain_paper.pdf

wow, that is an interesting paper, to see the loop design of the train circuit and the new C terminal that is to be built. I suppose that the moonbuggies will continue to operate between main and D concourse until the new C/D terminal is built, or the loop is extended to D? Or will people have to take the train to B and then a buggie? That might be confusing for some. And the new distance between B and C/D will be huge (I guess they say that's for the A380).

One question, who in the world is going to occupy those 2 completely new terminals?

squawk7500 Jul 1, 2008 8:12 am

DTW-McNamara tram is absolutely a 'cable-car' :D Don't recall if Otis's name is on the door-sill, but it's one of the elevator mfgr's.
Not quite the same 'cool-factor' as the original Disneyland Monorail, but it works ^

I think the original original was Skybus, put up in Pittsburgh's South Park in 1965. It's the grandfather of what is currently operating at many of these airports.

Was trying to get onto a car at EWR and one person occupied an entire car with all of his bags...awful, awful design.

Minus the jaunty music, I might add.

And b!oody slow.

Just to revive this thread from 9 years ago. I had the pleasure of riding in the EWR Airtrain again yesterday. Nothing has changed. If anything, progress has made the ride seem even more slow... I swear the NJTransit from Newark to EWR was faster than the ride on the Airtrain to Terminal C...

As long as we're looking back - good luck with this in Tampa, Pittsburgh, and elsewhere.

I still love taking the people movers at IAD for plane spotting - especially at night when all the long hauls are gearing up for departure (this past Wednesday got to see AF, EY, and BA birds).

Can't remember the details, but the one at FRA has the oddity of different carriages carrying airside and landside passengers (or is it Schengen and non?), from distinct platforms.

i think it's odd for singapore changi too

terminals are connected airside (can walk)
or can take airtrain

airtrain transports both air-side and land-side
one car on the airtrain is for airside
the other car is for landside
