Noise on Saab-340
I flew the Saab-340 last week for the first time (Silver to EWY) I could not believe the loud noise of the engine, yes I was sitting right next it. I have flown Q200 and Q400 not so bad. Might think about having earplugs available. Actually there is something written on the side of the engine about noise but not actually sure what it means.

My understanding is that much of the noise caused by a turboprop is not the engine, but is actually the air waves caused by the props hitting against the hull of the aircraft. The 'Q' in the Dash Q200 or Q400 means that it has an active noise cancellation system.

I'm not seeing anything topical to United, so I will move this to the TravelBuzz! Forum.

I think this needs to be rephrased!
Perhaps they could pull some Rolls Royce "Dart" engines off old Viscounts and use them. They were great quiet engines!

I used to fly on these all the time! IAD-CRW. Loud as hell, but some of them lacked a lav in the back and instead had a straight row of four seats. After getting off a redeye, I'd have no problem heading to the back row, lying down after take off and taking a one hour power nap.

Most of the regionals who use turbo-props carry foam ear plugs for passengers. You just have to ask for them. Because almost every flight from my home airport starts and ends with a turbo, I routinely carry some better quality ones in my kit bag.

I will go out of my way to fly on a turboprop these days ... I don't find the noise obnoxious at all

Was the pilot really pushing it ? Had a recent flight where the outbound flight was completely normal. The return had a huge delay so apparently they pushed it hard to make it on-time (made it on a dot) -- sounded like the engines were about to blow out !!!!
