Book flight online, with a layover?

All this time I've been booking direct flights online.
But this time I'm thinking I should stop over in some city and do some sightseeing.
I'm planning on flying from SFO to DEL.
I would like to stop over in some city (like Munich or Tokyo or wherever) and stay a day or two.
But most online places don't let you do that.

What's a way to schedule a layover without paying lots extra for the privilege? And can I do it online?

Thanks in advance for your suggestions. :)

Welcome to FT !

IIRC BA.com will let you book a stopover when booking online.

One way that works most of the time for me is to book it as a multi-city trip. Expedia lets you do that, as do some of the airline sites (like Lufthansa). It doesn't always work, but I've had good results with this method.

Booking a stopover doesn't work right on most booking sites. They rarely price out the correct stopover fare and instead merge two one-ways together - often for much more than you should have to pay if your fare allows a stopover.

But booking a layover is easy. Just use multi-city booking and pick your connecting cities.
