Former IATA Codes of Former Airliners

I hope this is the right place to post.

I am currently putting my old (really old) flight data together and found a few crytic entries in my old diaries of Airline Codes that simply don't make sense. Can you help me?
  1. FL581 - BOS-DTW in October 1981 in a DC-9-50 - According to wikipedia it would be "Air Tran". However, does not make sense, as Air Tran is fairly new. Who else operated a DC-9 at this time and flew this segment with FL as IATA-Code?

Further cases:
  1. RK36 - GDA-CDG in April 1980 in a DC-10. Could be Air Afrique.
  2. UT832 - ABJ-MRS in June 1979 in a DC-8. Most likely Orient-Air, later merged with Air France, but I'm note sure.
  3. RK38 - ABJ-OUA in June 1978 in a DC-10. Air Afrique?

Welcome to FT!

AirTran used to be ValuJet. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/ValuJet_Airlines

RK - yes, Air Afrique.

UT - UTA, Union des Transports Aeriens.

Thanks for the replies. However, ValuJet cannot be correct, as ValuJet did not operate in the 80s... Any other option?

That would be Frontier in its first incarnation. (See The World's Airlines, past, present & future for more.) FL is the current designator for AirTran.

Excellent, thank you. It also makes sense: The IATA-Code and the "We Are FLamily" website lists all the DC-9s operated, including a DC-9-50. Great reply, thanks!
