18 hours of darkness?

This may be a real dumb question, but since I don't travel overseas much, I just don't know the answer. I'm flying from LAX-BKK leaving at 10pm and arriving at 6am. Will there be light at some point? How much daylight? I would hate to be in the dark for 17 hours. Thanks

Try plotting the great circle route on, e.g., http://gc.kls2.com/, or on Google Earth. LAX-BKK goes far enough north that I'd guess you'll get at least some twilight mid-route, if you're flying within a few weeks either direction of June 21, the northern summer solstice. But real daylight? Probably not much, and none at all if you're flying during the winter.

The sun may rise shortly before you land, but otherwise you will be in darkness the whole way. The earth rotates from west to east (counterclockwise from the point of view above the north pole) and you will be flying east to west (clockwise from the point of view above the north pole) about half as fast.

Since FAs tend to want to keep the windows closed and the cabin dark no matter what it looks like outside, though, it won't make that much difference.

I flew LAX to MNL last month, same times (10 PM to 6 AM - stop in GUM for refuel, about 16 hours total).

Yeah, no sun the entire time. The sun finally "caught up" with us shortly after landing.

That is kind of cool. I've not been on a flight like that before.
