Why and how often do you fly?
Greetings & Salutations!
My very first post & thread here. I was just curious to know why and how often people fly. I travel as a field examiner (collateral auditor) for a major Global Organization. I travel everyweek. (Usually fly out Monday and fly back Thursday) Thank you in advance for your replies! Safe travels!!! |
welcome to flyertalk :)
so im presuming UBS, ING, Shell, or perhaps HSBC? ;) you can find LOTS of such discussion in this forum. a vast number of people here fly more than 100K a year, and many fly multiple times that. |
I average every other week Mon-Thur for work. Add to that 5-7 personal trips during the year.
|
Last year I traveled about 125K miles on about 116 segments.
So far this year about 21K miles, but I'm going to SYD/AKL next week and then to LGW right after I get back from that trip. |
I fly because the world is out there. It's a must see, must do for me. About 100k per year. But now I've found FT and want to attend more Do's!

I am located in ATL, working from home. Our main office is in MKE so I travel there about 8-10 times a year.
We also have an office in Shanghai, which I visit at least 4 times a year. |
Once or twice a week (usually same day trips) on business, flying eith LS, U2 or BE
|
Based around SFO, I'm a business applications consultant, so I travel 99% of the time all over the US (hi from Chicago). If I'm not circling the country for work, I'm circling the world for pleasure.
|
Usually twice a week (out on Sunday, back Thursday night)--totaled about 100K miles last year, mostly on AA--but I am in the middle of a 3-week no-flying stretch right now. I probably will do somewhere between 50-75K this year.

Biz & Family
I travel for two reasons: business and family.
I run a technology & content startup, so I fly YVR-JFK, YVR-YYZ-BOS, and YVR-YYZ a fair amount. Occasionally I do a flurry of YVR-SFO runs. My wife's family is located on Eastern Seaboard of the U.S., and in the Caribbean, so we go there once a year. My family is in Australia and China, so we visit those locations once every few years. I use AC for most of the flights, although I prefer CX for YVR-HKG and QF for YVR-SYD. Oops! I forgot to add biz travel frequency. I used to fly back and forth YVR-YYC three times a week, catching the early morning commuter and returning in the late afternoon for a contract I had with a Large Corporation there. I'm glad I don't do that anymore. |
Generally Monday-Thursday for Business on a weekly basis.
On top of that 5-7 personal trips. |

Welcome to FT, Fly-Me-to-the-Moon!! ^ (and nice handle, btw)
I used to fly weekly (Mon - Thurs/ Fri, like you) when I was consulting. Generally not far, ORD-NYC and the like. I would vaca in Europe and Asia, and that was generally enough miles to get top-tier status on one airline and mid-tier on a second. I've since moved and for the most part, don't fly for business (:(). However, I think I may be going overseas a couple times for business this year. I am also hoping to make a couple of trips home and a few trips to India to see relatives. And I would like to see some other stuff around here (e.g., Egypt, Thailand, etc.) since it's easier to make a quick trip than it was from the US. I've lost all status on UA, but I would like to keep my status on NW/ KLM. We'll see how it goes. ;) |
I fly a lot because my work requires me to do so.
|
My business travel comes in waves so maintaining status is tough. It's usually based on where the next deal is so I'm not usually flying consistently to the same location.
I do however travel a lot for vacation. I would say at least every other month I'm traveling for a long weekend somewhere and at least twice a year I take an extended vacation. |
