when is "the third week of January" this year?

a european said to keep the "third week of january" open. i looked at the calendar and am not sure when that is. in your opinion, what would those dates be? (and obviously i would call and ask if i could, but i can't right now )

Jan 14-20 would be the third week to me. (I always start on Monday). But with the metric system, maybe it works differently. ;)

I assume you mean "next year" because January of this year is in the past. :D

you are right. which should give you some indication why figuring out third week is so hard.

For me it would be 1/14-20 for 2007 and 1/13-19 for 2008.

Assuming they are basing their "third week" on the official ISO calendar then this is indeed the week starting Monday 14 October. W1/2008 starts on 31 January 2007.

In this case it is very simple because the month starts on a Tuesday. Regardless of how you interpret "third week" you almost certainly arrive at the same week.

It's much more confusing when the month starts on a Saturday. In that case you might say the first week begins on the second day of the month, so the first day of the month is the zeroth week. Or the first day of the month could be the first week and second day could be the beginning of the second week. It depends on how you interpret it.

I found this interesting discussion on the subject: Denotation of the "n-th Week of the Month/Year"

Also note that "European" is rather vague. Do you mean Greek Orthodox or some other type of European? :D

i think just regular European (whtaever that is), but since ground floor and first floor are the same in US and different in Europe, I was reluctant to assume.

I haven't checked the official ISO calendar, but I doubt it - both because that was nearly 11 months ago and because it was a Wednesday. Perhaps you meant "31 December 2007?"

Huh? 2008 starts at the end of January 2007 and the third week of January is in October. Those seem about 11 and 9 months off, not to mention October 14 is a Monday in neither 2007 nor 2008. I guess that's what happens when you leave something simple to a standards committee.

I would say it's Jan 13-19, 2008 (weeks start on Sundays to me).

I'd say 14 January - as a lot of people will be back at work on 2 January after the holidays there is plenty of time in that week to make it count as the first week of work.
