Flight delay information

Over the last 24 hours I was stuck in the Mid West secondary to bad weather.
1. Why does the internet site for the airline relay different information than what is actually going on? Three hours after my flight had been canceled, the airline's website for "flight status" was still reading "delayed".
2. Was it a coincidence that the flights canceled for weather were not filled? The excuse is the smaller CRJ'S and E-170's are canceled in bad weather. Yet some do get out. Why would an airline buy so many of type of planes that can not fly in bad weather?

2. It's not that these planes can't fly in bad weather, but because canceling a smaller plane effects less travelers than canceling a mainline flight. Canceling an RJ opens up a slot for a mainline plane when IROPS/weather reduce the number of take-off/landing slots when the airport is running under restrictions.
