400 Airline Menus for Browsing - Wow!
I saw an article, When topflight food was standard on planes (interesting in itself) that had a link to a real treasure:
The Northwestern University Transportation Library Menu Collection - OMG, what a huge collection of old menus. Each one is beautifully scanned and annotated. An example is a stunning BOAC menu for London-Cairo-Teheran-New Delhi: Title: Menu: New Delhi, India to Cairo, Egypt View this resource Item record number: BOA006 Room 5316 Date of Trip: August 8, 1965 Physical description of the menu: 4 leaves, 30 cm. x 20 cm. Check out the National Airlines menus that are designed to be used as sun reflectors after the flight! Really neat to a menu-collector like me. |
Thanks so much for pointing us in the direction of this website. Just for fun I pulled up a Pan Am Menu. This was a route that I frequently flew and remember, so well, that great food and service. Looking forward to perusing more of the menus. Thanks again. Great find. Just noticed that the menu appears on the left-hand side of the page as a thumbnail. Click it. Oh my, the days of unlimited Beluga Caviar, choice of Veal Oscar, Lobster Thermidor, etc. Nice memories.

Maybe the three threads could be merged.
I find the "milk run" routes the most interesting. London-Frankfurt-Tel Aviv-Bombay-Bangkok-Hong Kong. Five segments is a lot for what is now a not-even-that-long nonstop LHR-HKG. Lunch-Dinner-Continental Breakfast-Breakfast-Lunch (although BA was cheap and only served afternoon tea instead of a second lunch on the FRA-TLV segment if you were a through passenger, even in F. Cheap sods! Also interesting is the Air France "apology" insert during a U.S. oil strike as flights were consolidated, resulting in extra seats being added. Quelle surprise! |
