Hartmann Warranty Problem

I have a circa-1992 Hartmann 44-inch over-the-shoulder carry-on garment bag which I need to replace. Hartmann says their warranty does not cover the problem, but I think it does.

The garment bag (coffee-colored nylon) has developed a rather pronounced musty smell, as if it has mold. The interior lining is flaking. I sent it to Hartmann on their suggestion. They said it was not mold, but some of the chemicals had decomposed from age. The bag otherwise is in excellent condition and does not look its age. I would estimate I've used it no more than 50 times. It has no rips, no punctures, the leather trim is in great shape, and all the clips, zippers etc are working properly. It has been stored indoors all this time.

Hartmann said they could not replace it, but offered to sell me a replacement at half-price. I read their warranty as covering this problem, as I do not see how inert chemicals and materials should decay after 15 years with minimal use.

Does anyone have any similar experience?

Assuming I do replace it, I want a carry on, as I dislike checking my luggage. Hartmann has a 22-inch wheelie garment bag, and a 44-inch over-the-shoulder bag. The wheelie easily fits the airline carry-on sizing templates; the over-the-shoulder barely. Of course, the wheelie holds less than the over-the-shoulder. I don't mind carrying a heavy bag (I lift weights for exercise and can easily handle a 40-lb bag), but I don't want to suddenly discover an over-the-shoulder bag does not fit the carry-on size template. Any thoughts?

Thanks.

Open it up and leave it in the sunshine for a few hours.
