Jetlag to Phillipines

I was wondering how Jetlag would be coming from San Francisco to Manila( the flight goes via Agana Guam on the same plane). It Departs from SFO at 9:05 PM and Arrives Manila at 5:40AM 2 days later. On the return it departs at 10:30PM and Arrives at 6:30 PM the same day. Being that this would be in winter I know the time difference is 8 hours.

Is it true that I won't get jetlag as I will fall asleep after dinner around 12 and wakeup before the flight arrives and pretend to start my day at 6 AM, take a shower etc.

On the return flight if I go to sleep after dinner fora few hours and then stay awake for the rest of the flight as I arrive at 6:30 PM and by the time I get home it will be around 9 PM.

Are these good flights to avoid jetlag? Any tips for flying from Manila to SF? To me the date line has nothing to do with Jetlag as the time difference is 8 hours. Or is it 16 hours due to the dateline.

Your jetlag has nothing to do with the dateline but more with the time difference as your body clock is telling you that when u arrive in MNL at 5:00am, it is actually 9pm SFO time.

The way to get around jetlag is to start adjusting your body clock towards your destination's time. So try to sleep enroute to MNL so that when you arrive there in the morning, you had enough sleep. Try to stay awake and get some sunshine, avoid afternoon naps and only sleep in the evenings. You'll most likely wake up early in the morning like 4am but that's fine...you can check e-mails :) and then get back to sleep. If you can't get to sleep, try taking Benadryl!

During the day, go out of your way to make sure that you get out and continue to let your body know that it is daytime. Yes, you'll start getting sleepy in the afternoon and try not to doze off. Otherwise, you'll end up with the West Coast body clock. On the way back here to the US, do the same.

I have done many trips to Asia and previously, took an afternoon nap and this continued for a week as I couldn't keep my eyes open! So if you want to get rid of your jetlag fast, get some sunshine. In no time, your body will realize that it needs to adjust to the new time, and before you know it, it is time to fly back!

Hope this works for you.

Agree with the previous poster's advice to try to get some sleep along the way and get on the destination's clock right away. Still, your results can be unpredictable.

On a recent trip from the US to SIN, I got a bit of sleep along the way and got on the SIN clock when I arrived, and never had a problem. Did the same thing on the return, and felt tired for a week....:o

Generally, heading west is easier than going east. In the former case you gain time, in the latter, you lose it.

I agree with the advice already given. The sooner you get on local time the better, so tough it out upon arrival if you possibly can. I still find it takes me 4-5 days upon return to US from Asia before I can sleep through the night again.
