How do YOU get comfortable on international flights in coach?

I'm stuck flying coach from Dallas to Narita - 12 hours, 55 minutes. Upgrade to business not looking good.

So, please let me know what your creative ideas are for getting comfortable in coach! I'll be on a 777, window seat. What helps you relax and enjoy your flight? Noise-reduction headphones? Neck pillow?

I drink excessively, pass out, wake up hung over, and start all over again!

I second that... except, if you sleep in a wrong way, you will have the worst spasm you can ever imagine. So make sure you have neck support if you plan to do this. On the other hand, you will be so drunk to even realize you are in pain.

On waiting list for business - want to be prepared in case that option doesn't work!

Let's hear some creativity! One FA on a DFW-NRT flight told me that her tip is to avoid caffeine and alchohol, and drink at least a cup of H20 each hour.

NOTHING. I sleep poorly on planes. So I pace. I always take an aisle seat so I can get up easily. Stand in line with others for the restroom just to have someone to talk with. Hang around the galley and talk with the FA's. Stand up and do stretching exercises. And I read books and watch movies and eat often. BUT mostly I avoid coach and then do the same thing in business class.

thinking mechanically rather than chemically--

I use two cushions from Magellan's catalog: self-inflating lumbar and tush cushions. Not magic, but *much* better than without. And they deflate and roll up into small (but, alas, not miniscule) stow-away items.

you are not supposed to take Ambien with alcohol, but a double scotch with an Ambien chaser does it for me up to one hour before landing.

I once did not get upgraded and I stood most of the flight.
I was in the last row aisle seat and after takeoff no one seemed to mind.
However that was only 5.5 hours flying time so I only stood about 4 of it.
It was nice and cool near the air and I felt good when I landed.

A row of 4 or 5 seats to myself has done the trick in the past. @:-)

Along with several of the other suggestions, I have to mention not to underestimate SeatGuru's advice on this plane and especially this route. Your profile doesn't show your status but if elite keep checking back for any any of the 31ABHJ seats, especially around a week before the flight as upgrades are processed. Several other threads have covered the benefits/drawbacks of these seats but on the NRT routes they can be a lifesaver.

I've had luck once or twice in taking an "inside" seat on a fully empty row in order to try and dissuade others from taking the two seats on either side and luckily it's worked but by no means is this guaranteed. If you're flying with a companion this strategy can be even more effective although still not guaranteed. Good luck and enjoy Japan!

One more thing that works for me is to not sleep a night before. Stay awake for as long as possible so that the moment you hit the plane, you are in a different world.

Works every time.
