FAA Ground Stop...no Storms???
Amazing to me...Intellicast radar shows no thunderstorms but a small one over the Jersey shore, yet PHL, JFK, LGA, EWR, and BOS are all on a ground stop due to T-storms enroute. I wish I could attach the radar screenshot...empty from the western edge of PA to the coast, Lake Erie to the Mason-Dixon line!

They have to be seeing something. I am waiting at LAX for AS 6 to take off to DCA. We were 40 minutes late due to an FA being late, then delayed for another hour on the tarmac by ATC as the figured we needed to fly to Houston to avoid storms running all the way across the country (adding 1 hour to the estimated flight time), which meant we needed more fuel - so back to the gate - which meant a delay that put the crew over limit. So everyone was let off the plane and we are now scheduled for a 5:30 departure (almost 5 hours late).
It is a shame our FA was late. The 12:40 PM UA flight LAX-IAD (same original departure time as my AS flight to DCA) got off only 20 minutes late and current status is arrival to IAD only 40 minutes late. Whereas UA's 4:00 was cancelled (assuming due to the "storms"). |
I don't know what what radar maps you're looking at, but its NASTY right now on most of the East Coast! NC in particular is getting slammed, and there are large regional hubs there in Charlotte and RDU . . . which messes with schedules everywhere.

There were many choice words on the news interviews on the radio on the way home, as people were calling people where they were going and asking how the weather was there.
I don't know how it all works, but to me today is a bit like calling school before it starts snowing. One guy was pissed (though it was probably his fault for not checking), his flight this afternoon was canceled, he didn't get a call, he had to get a hotel, and they say maybe, maybe they could get him to Atlanta for tomorrow. They didn't say which airline. Don't picture a flyertalker getting to the desk and not knowing their flights were changed. |
Well, I'm stuck in ATL because the inbound crew was delayed coming in. They're saying an 1.5 hour wait. My flight is headed to JFK. I'm expecting a disaster.

UA flight 7530 from MIA-IAD scheduled to depart at 1:45pm actually departed at 7:45pm

Yesterday I flew LGA/ORD on the 12:55pm flight.
As we were about to enter Cleveland Center, ATC was barking massive weather related delays to all pilots. From Boston to Kentucky. And he said them in different sequences for various regions. Interesting and scary at the same time. |
