How much does your carry-on luggage weigh?
I'm just curious as to how heavy you all travel.
While waiting to be picked up from the airport I weighed my bag on one of the luggage scales and came up with a staggering 28.5 pounds. No wonder my shoulders were sore! This is my single bag containing all of my clothing, electronics, laptop, toiletries, etc. that I brought with me on an 10 day business/leisure trip. The bag itself weighs just over 3 pounds so I figured I was carrying just over 25 pounds of "stuff". Unfortunately I don't see myself shaving a lot of this weight off unless I leave my laptop behind which would save 7-8 pounds or my running shoes/gear which would be another 3 pounds.. |
Wow, a 10 day trip all in one carry on... that's pretty impressive.
I think most of the time I'm in the 20lb range if I carry on only my laptop bag (its a rolling breifcase with an overnight compartment, not just for the laptop) but if I actually take my rollaborad plus the laptop bag then I'd average the rollaboard at 30+ lbs, so I'd probably tip the scales well over 50lbs if both of my carry ons were considered. |
My rollaboard and laptop roller bag probably weigh a good 30 lbs combined. I can usually get 4-5 days worth of clothing, and this usually suits me just well (no pun intended). :)
Much better than having the airline lose my stuff. |
My wife's weighed something like 32 lbs at the Lufthansa counter a few weeks ago. We knew because they weighed it.
They informed her if she was carrying it on, it had to be 8 kg (18 or so lbs) or under, so lots of stuff got moved to the suitcase. I've only seen carry on luggage weighed one other time, it was a bit of a surprise. |
Between my laptop bag and my carry-on I come close to the 28 pound mark. I don't check bags so the carry-on has to carry all my clothes for whatever trip I may be taking. I've done as much as 11 days in the summer and 7 days in the winter with only a carry-on. In the bag though I carry a ballistic nylon bag for dirty clothes for the trip home. That bag I check. Having a bag of laundry go missing on the way home doesn't bother me that much.

A "full" loadout on carryon for me is:
Laptop MP3 player x 2 Phone x 2 Book (usually x 2) Travel documents Rarely weighs in at more than 14lbs. I don't carry clothes (occasionally underwear just incase) in carryon to avoid the extra weight. |

I didn't weigh it this time but I'd guestimate about 15 lbs: smaller laptop, digital camera (and both of their accessories) and two days' clothes because my larger backpack was being checked through to Prague whereas I was staying in London for 24 hours. I tend to overpack it with books. |
Has anyone ever weighed their roll-aboards w/o anything in it? That's what amazed me. Even w/o anything in it you can be looking at 8-9lbs. Cheers.

If I carry my camera equipment on a trip of 7-9 days
My carry on is between 30-35 lb. If I skip my camera stuff.. I'm well under 20lb. Thats all my stuff. I do not check in anything. If I am doing one of my frequent family/friends visits... 10lb or less.. in my backpack.. which may include my computer and the forbidden water bottle. |

rollaboard typically 25-30 lbs, laptop bag 12-15 lbs, sufficient for business travel of up to 5 days

Have also had carryon luggage weighed a couple of times by QF in Oz. They have a nasty 7 Kg (15 lb) policy including international flights!. Was at 9 Kg but they didn't care, think they were looking for those folks packing the small refrigerators in their TravelPros.
As with all these things, it becomes a farce if rules aren't enforced. 7Kg is a bit tight. Think I'd up the weight to 12Kg and say the total of all bags should fit into the required volume. Always going to be a problem - people will start stuffing their coat pockets.... Probably double allowances for "proper" C class. It would be helpful if airlines didn't lose/damage stuff or took proper responsibility when they do. I would guess I typically carry around 8kg - I use a "large" laptop style bag with a small laptop inside. |

Three cheers for a "nasty" policy.... I get fed up waiting in security queues or elsewhere because people bring so much carry-on. Laptop bags have become the excuse to effectively double up hand baggage allowances. Then you get all those bags of duty free. I don't want my limited carry-on damaged as someone shoves their heavy stuff into a locker not designed to take so much.

LAX-AKL-MEL MEL-ADL ADL-BNE BNE-LAX I won't check my laptop or my camera and I need a couple of books. I agree that security lines are a hassle when people pack their whole house carry-on but I think there needs to be a happy medium. Should be interesting to see CSA's allowances this weekend. I intend to do Rome carry on simply because I have nothing between that and my large backpack which I'm certainly not carrying for a weekend. |
