How long do they keep your checked in luggage?

I am flying from Chicago to India via Amsterdam on KLM/Northwest, and I am taking a four day break in Amsterdam. If I check in my luggage at Chicago, will it go all the way to India and just wait for me there for four days? Or, will I have to take it with me and recheck-in on my flight from Asmterdam to India?

Thanks.

Welcome to flyer talk, remixer. I assume that your airline will not likely allow you to check bags to India sine you are stopping for 4 days on route. But a call to your airline customer service should provide definitive info.

In any case, even if your airline would otherwise be willing to check it all the way through to India (highly doubtful), you can always ask them to check it only as far as AMS.
