Three light plane shunts with broken bits of aircraft left behind. Everybody walked away every time, thanks be. Sadly we had to shoot one of the planes.

Scariest on a big plane was on a Pan Am 707 over Alaska; we had to do the duck and roll thing to avoid a midair with another jet, which went by my window at around 1000 mph - and about 1000 feet away. A deadheading PA skipper sitting in the seat in front of me said that was his closest call ever. Dearie me.

Had a few aborted landings in the past few years, nothing serious.

Last night had a bit of a hairy landing coming into LGW. Strong winds, heavy rain, could feel the aircraft was not head on to the runway thanks to crosswind component on final approach and was expecting a go-round. Those in the front managed to pull it off and got a few claps too...

Most of my dramatic experiences in the air originate from a year in the RAF. Was landing a Grob Tutor with my instructor beside me, everything was fine and in order but about 50ft off the deck the airplane dropped out the sky with an exceptionally heavy thud. Aircraft went U/S for the rest of the day to be checked out and the instructor was rather confused, we hadn't stalled and there were no winds that day!
My wife had a rather scary experience flying with the USAF, ended up diverting to the Azores on a transatlantic flight when problems with the fuel tank developed. Emergency vehicles awaited them with guys dressed up in tin foil uniforms ;) They ended up alighting the aircraft by emergency chute.

A couple or three.
1. Being a passenger (worked at SAC HQs) on Gen. Ellis' 707 converted tanker. The general always did his take-offs and landings. We came from Tokio going to Shemia in the Aleutians. Cross winds almost made him tip a wing onto the runway.
Comment by receiving ground personell: ' We thought he would loose it '

2. AF staff assistance flight McGuire to Sondrestrom Greenland. Plane's cabin never received any heat. Landing gear would not retract. Emergency landing at Goose Bay to repair. No repair possible, so, return to McGuire, still cold and drafty.

3. 1997 JFK to FRA, smelly smoke in cabin just before over Boston. Emergency landing with foam on runway with fire engines trying to outrace plane on touchdown. Good landing. Four hour inspection, no suspect of fire anywhere. Just smelly. Reboarding same plane !!
Got as far as St John Newfoundland, smelling again, return to Boston with same emergency procedure, but everything alright. Just scared.
Got put up in Hotels for next day try-outs. Different plane worked.

Mid '70's Allegheney BAC-111 from PIT to STL (?) - anyway, in daytime cruise with a very light pax load, a cabin window on Lt side blew out with a sound like a 12 Ga shotgun - roaring wind - swirls of paper, etc. I was sitting aisle across about 3 rows back. A guy on Lt side 1 row back started pointing and screaming "The window, the window!" which to me sounded like "the wing, the wing" - that misunderstanding really got me going for a minute! Co-pilot came running back - looked and visibly freaked out - ran forward and aircraft immediately dived to a lower altitude. I do not recall O2 masks dropping.
We deplaned in DAY and sat there for several hours until a replacment aircraft arrived, but not before we watched a mechanic right before our eyes cover the broken window with strips of "600 mph tape" to ready it for a ferry flight.
In the last 30 years, I have also had 2 engine failures - 1 IFSD and one on take-off (aborted); stories for another day.
