And they said Denver was an "all-weather airport"
I remember very clearly the PR talk from Denver when the new airport opened in 1994. They called it "the nation's first all-weather airport" and said it would make the airport closings of Stapleton a thing of the past.
Is it possible for the thousands of stranded travelers to sue for false advertising?

Excuse me, but that's not what I said. I said that the PR for the new airport was blatantly deceptive. I'm sure it is unsafe to land in gale-force winds in a blizzard. That being the case, why lie about it and promise an "all weather airport"?

I heard that the DEN officials regret ever coming up with that phrase!
Is that like the "unsinkable Titantic"? (But then again "the unsinkable Molly Brown" was from Denver! )

I actually flew into DEN during what I think was the first blizzard after it opened, when they kept the airport open. What they couldn't seem to do was clear Pena Blvd., or any of the other streets, and it was a drive I will never forget. Then of course the airport workers couldn't manage to get to work for days, etc. I think that they subsequently decided they'd close during extreme weather.
Do you think that's the only lie that was told about DEN? How about the great new automated baggage system?

While the runways were tough to plow because of the constant wind drifts etc...
The ramps were probably the bigger of the two problems. What good is a plane coming in if it has nowhere to go?

i wonder if they had the MDW incident (WN jet landing in snow, skidding off runway) a couple winters in their mind. that might have been incentive to completely close rather than stay open to comply with the phrase and risk accidents.

Seems to me the guy was telling the truth -- at least mostly. DEN is an all-weather airport. No one ever said anything about the planes being all-weather!
I guess it's debatable whether it was the first one, though. Seems to me many airports built before DEN would stand up to lots of different weather conditions.
