This is easy.

LA:
Traffic
Air quality
Housing costs
(Of course, the idolatry and superficiality are intangibles.)

Upstate NY (old residence):
There were 6 things:
November, December, January, February, March and April

East side of the Big Island:

1. With the growing season year-round, it's just so hard to remember which fruit is in season -- lychees, rambutans, oranges, star fruit, tangerines, multiple kinds of bananas, etc. -- and the fact that so often there is so much fruit it ends up getting thrown away.

2. The always-difficult decision about which beach to go to.

3a. It's so embarrassing to never have to wait more than 3 minutes at security at the airport, when others get to have a big airport. Our self-esteem suffers.

3b. Ahi or mahi mahi or ono. It's so hard to decide.

Upstate NY - Ithaca to be more specific

1) Damn hippies push all their agendas through the town legislature so nothing ever gets done. Can't patch the streets unless you can guarantee a tree can live under it

2) locals who think i'm in college all the time. I'm never asked "so what do you do?" it's always "So you go to Cornell, right?"

3) the city planner who decided to bottleneck the whole town onto route 13 and then put a traffic light every 2 feet. It should not take 15 minutes to go 1 mile in a city with a population of 30,000.

Kampala

1) The roads! Potholes with the occasional pavement

2) Electricity loadshedding (we have electricity only every other day)

3) Houses don't have addresses so no pizza delivery.

One of these posts was only a matter of time.

SFO

1. Getting hassled by a smelly, crack head bum, while doing a withdrawl at a
ATM and watch a SFO cop drive right by.

2. Zero traffic enforcement in the city. Very dangerous as a pedestrian.
Hellen Keller could drive here and fit in. (dare I say this type of humor is also taboo, the world's most politically correct abode).

3. For a ?? urban hipster type of city, try getting any kind of decent food after
930pm. As a contrast I recently made a reservation at Babbo's in NYC
at 1115pm.

Reno:

1) Housing costs. (See #2.)
2) Californication (high migration = traffic + unaffordable housing + urban sprawl + change in attitude) The most common thing I see come out of it is people moving to Nevada because they don't like California anymore, and then try their hardest to turn Nevada into another California.
3) A lack of quality food. (Buffet does not count.)

MHT

1) Taxes (I know we advertise no income or sales tax, but we make up for it in property tax)

2) Ice storms

3) No tapas bars.

This was actually the second already, there was also a KOA on the first page.

And yes, I didn't appreciate their frankness ;)

Osaka

The racist people that have no problem swearing (or otherwise yelling) at you on the street (or the bus people) (although there are a lot of people that will come up to you and speak English)

The subway system that stops at midnight.

It's quite expensive to get good western food here.

tkey75 Nov 26, 2006 11:10 pm

I don't live in it, but drive to it just about every day.

Orlando:

1) Ranked as America's angriest city

2) The Rat

3) Unbearably hot, steamy summers

#2 => I think we have a good balance between pedestrians and automobiles. Unlike Boston, where I am afraid to cross the street, SF's drivers are quite predictable although there are always idiots. I think a big problem is that "traffic calming" creates a lot of road rage.

Mine:
1. Homeless/panhandlers/drug addicts
2. Politicians that are "politically correct" and afraid to take a strong stand on issues.
3. All problems that result from #2.
Maybe a fourth one -- too many NIMBYs.

You took the words out of my mouth about Hawai`i ^ :(

ANB:

1. The economy. Gawd help anyone trying to sell a home right now. It would be a buyer's market if there were any actual buyers out there. It is a manufacturing driven economy and the future of manufacturing in this country is not bright. Textiles and apparel are gone. The auto industry is our current savior, but technology businesses will never relocate here (see #3).

2. The shopping. Although this year has seen a dramatic increase in the number of stores, we still lack a grocery store where anything other than the most common foods and ingredients are available. My daughter called me the other night from Super Wal*Mart and asked where she could find fennel for a turkey stuffing recipe she was trying. My answer was "Birmingham".

3. The schools. I should have listed this first. Many of the problems in the area could be alleviated if the educational system could be improved. This is a statewide issue and cannot easily be fixed locally since 90% of the property taxes go to the state for redistribution.

Healthcare, higher culture, politics, media & transportation are also issues, but we make do with what we have.

Now, with all that, I still love it here and it has been my decision to stay. I like the people who were here before me and am more comfortable with the predominant beliefs and lifestyle than other places I've lived outside the southeastern US. I mostly like the weather - I wish it were warmer in the winter. Cost of living is amazingly low. All in all, there are worse places and I've lived in some of them.

Portions of the post that previously appeared in this space have been deleted. I would provide you with a reason why, but doing so would likely be against the TOS.
