Overhead bin issue: Was I wrong?
 

I think I just took my first Song converted 757 yesterday. I had seat 2C and boarded with a small 20" carryon.

I was concerned about taking this trip at all by myself because of a pretty intense back problem I'm having. I didn't want to have to ask anybody to help me get my bag on the security belt or in the overhead bin. So I packed my carryon very light and thought I could handle it.

I put my bag in the bin over my seat and was trying to arrange it wheels first so it would take up less room when a man said with an exasperated huff, "Would you put that in the next bin so I can have the bulkhead".

Confused, :confused: I looked up & down the aisle and noticed that 2C & D had the last half of the first bin and the first half of the second bin directly overhead. In other words, the bin divider was exactly in the middle of the second row. The AB bins were aligned as they should be, one bin directly over each row.

I didn't know know what to say, I didn't really want to heave it down again and back up into the bin behind me. Before I could say anything he huffed again and mumbled something I'm probably glad I couldn't hear and slung his 2 carryons in the 2nd bin, stormed past me and took his seat in 1D.

Should I have known to use the second bin? I usually go out of my way to leave space for others keep my stuff in my space, but this sort of threw me. Bin hogs and jumpers are a pet peeve of mine and I hope I didn't just join the club. :eek: :eek:

Mr. Huffy needs to get a life. You're perfectly entitled to put your bag in the bin over your seat, or anywhere reasonably close if that's full.

Huffy not only needs a life he needs some manners. I have absolutely no symapthy for this type of trash. Regardless of your physical limitations, you have as much right to that spot as he does.

You're fine. He belonged in the bin.

I may have been asleep but I've never seen seat number assignments in the overheads. You did fine...and avoided Mr 3C's tirade.

First come first serve. I agree with the rest here.

It's tough to be in the bulkhead since you *have* to have overhead, but it's not like you were trying to shove a concert harp in up there.

Smile serenely at people like that, it drives them nuts.

You have got to be kidding me! Have common sense and manors just totally gone south? Marylou, as has been pointed out previously, the overheads do not have seat numbers assigned to them, you did nothing wrong in putting your bag where you did. This guy is in serious need of not only a life but manors as well!
Ironicly since this jet usually boards and exits from the middle door the guy actually was able to get his bags faster by putting them over row 3 vs 1!

That's why I travel with a small laptop bag. It holds any personal items I might need to access during the flight, and I can squeeze it into most any remaining gap in the bin over my seat, or even under the seat in a pinch. My rollaboard goes wheels-first wherever I find room (spare the flames, it's of legal size) ;) , and often gets gate-checked, but it doesn't matter since the stuff I might need is close to hand.

Mr. HuffyPants had 2 bags so could've done the same, or could've politely explained his desperate need to keep his entire luggage ensemble close at hand, and also should've offered to relocate your bag (it was for his sole benefit). You would've been under no obligation to accept.

You truly are nice. You had one carryon, he had two, so you have no need to worry about being a "bin hog". ^

Too bad there are folks like Mr. Huffy that specialize in spreading unhappiness. :td:

When I have a bulkhead seat, I always try to board early so that I don't have to scrounge for space.

If Mr. Huffy wanted the bin space, he could have asked you nicely if he could have moved your bag, and then made sure that, whenever you needed something from your bag or upon arrival, he could check if he could offer assistance in bringing your bag back to you before removing his own from the bin.

So, you are saying, he put his bags in the bin one back from your row? If so, 98% of the time, they board the Ex/Song planes from the middle door anyways, so wouldn't someone perfer to have their bags behind them when you exit from behind you?

What a shame that there are still lots of people around behaving just like Mr. Huffy, all they think of is themselves. He probably gets away with this kind of nonsense quite often. As somebody already described him here, he's trash.
