Need extra pages for Passport
 

I need more pages for my passport. I am going to be leaving the country for 6 months and I will need extra pages. I live in NYC. Where can I get extra pages? Is there a place in NYC where I can walk in with my passport without having to send it out?
Any ideas?

Go to the Passport Center on Varick St...
 

On Varick (or it might be Hudson) just south of West Houston Street, is a US Passport Center. They will give you a 24-page insert to add to your existing 24 page passport. I don't know if you can just show up. They have an appointment system that you can access via telephone. (Google it, is your best bet).

If you are getting close to your 10 year renewal date, you may just want to get a new passport. When you get a new passport, you can request a 48 page passport instead of the standard one. Since there is a fee to do either one, you may just want to get a new passport issued, which will probably be more expensive in the short run, but save you money in the long run from not having to pay 2 different fees at different times.

If you do it an American Embassy overseas, it can usually be done on the spot (within 30 minutes or so) and free. ^

Free if done at an embassy/consulate; charge if done at a US Passport Agency IIRC.

You definitely need an appointment to use the Passport office. Usually they say that you should only come in to the office if travelling within 14 days, but I don't know how closely (if at all) they enforce that policy:

As you can see on the instructions, when using the mail service, there is only a fee when requesting expedited service. I would call the NY facility to ask whether the fee will be charged for a walk-in request.

A couple of years ago I had an appointment to get a new passport at the NYC passport agency on an expedited basis. I submitted the required material but was told I needed proof of travel to show that I needed expedited service. I didn't have proof of pending travel with me, so I was sent on my way with the understanding that I could go through the process again once I had proof of travel. I went across the street and into a travel agency, bought a refundable ticket and rushed back to put in for it. I picked it up the next day.

Embassy is the Best Bet
 

I needed additional passport pages and decided to get it done - while out of the country. I had just come back from Eastern Europe - and got way too many stamps [especially on train border crossings] and was headed to Singapore. One morning, I grabbed a taxi to the U.S. Embassy in Singapore and as soon as I got out of the cab, I was 'identified' as an American and led straight to the head of the line. Once through security, I filled out an application in a small Passport/Visa Office and had just picked up an out-of-date copy of the New Yorker when they called my name. All in all, about twenty minutes. They just affix the new pages - lettered rather than numbered - stamp and sign it - and off you go.

Sadly, I had to do this as well. Needed a new passport for some travel almost a month away, but I'd be traveling away from any passport agencies in the US for that time, and I needed a physical visa in that time as well so I really did need my passport expedited. I ended up buying a refundable ticket to YOW and going back to the BOS passport folks the next day. Got new passport, refunded YOW ticket, got visa, travelled happily enough.

I really should've asked for the free 48 page passport then though... I'm going to need a new one within 18 - 24 months of the last passport at this rate.

(Why can't immigrations folks figure out how NOT to stamp your passport 3 pages down from the last stamp!? I guess they get better as it gets almost full... :))

I had extra pages added about a year ago. Sent my passport to the address others have mentioned along with a priority postal envelope for return. I got it back in less than a week!!! I was very pleased and it was so easy. No charge for the extra pages. I suggest getting the extra pages now if you need them, before everyone orders passports for travel to Carribean, Mexico and Canada requirements kick in. Might be a wait then.

I have to do this in NYC because I am out of pages, and I still have 7 years left on my passport. So i don't want to get a new one. I guess I will call then go to the passport place in NYC.

It might not have helped even if you had asked for a 48 page passport.
I did and was issued a standard 24 page one instead. The same thing happened to a friend of mine.

I guess that's one way for the government to get its hands on the frequent flying Americans' passports more often.

Same thing happened to me when I last renewed, in 1999. I even called the hotline (which at the time was a 900-number at $5 a call). They told me to attach a written note to my renewal application, stating that I wanted a 48 page passport. Three weeks later, my curent 24-page passport arrived :mad:

We both got extra pages added last month in DUB.

It was free and took about 25 minutes. ^

Unfortunately, we had forgotten to call before the first time we walked over to the Embassy, only to find that they were only open between 8 and 11 for customers, so we had to go back the following business day. :( It worked out OK. The walk took us through an interesting part of the city which we otherwise would not have seen. We were amused that the concierge insisted that it was way too far to walk (it was about two miles at the most), and insisted that we take a taxi. We just love walking in new cities. You miss so much in taxis.
