Where in the world for dental work???
Anyone got any recommendations for where to go in the world for good quality and cheap dental care? Need some work done and it will cost me thousands of pounds in London so looking to get a holiday out of it and make savings having it done abroad instead. Would appreciate any advice on where's best and how to get there from London.

A hearty welcome to FT, ttwduke!
I suspect that this thread will soon be moved to a more suitible forum on FT (Community is really for get-togethers, birthday wishes, and similar regarding members o the FT community. But to answer yuor question, I know that one of our members has had good luck finding competent services (the proposed surgical plan matched the one that her US dental surgeon had provided) in Bangkok. I believe that she also mentioned that Hungry was also known for inexpensive qualified dentists. One thing to consider though (depending on the services that you receive): You probably will need to schedule the surgery for the early part of your trip (due to potential complications, and wanting everything to at least superficially heal before exposing it to the rigors of hypobaria and dry air). On the other hand, oral pain might make your holiday a memorable one, but not in a good way. |
I'll second the welcome above and move this to TravelBuzz where you can find a rich variety of "general" travel topics that can't be otherwise attributed to a particular location, airline, or hotel chain.
Please continue to follow it there via the direct link. techgirl Community co-moderator |

There are several threads about dental work outside the US. Here are a few that might help:

Here is where I do all my dental work, and many people I know who travels on business or pleasure to Bangkok go here:

FWIW, we also ran into quite a few Austrians who had traveled there on the train in the morning, wre seen by the dentist, and returned to Vienna that evening. My wife had to go back within 10 days to get crowns put in and so we did a leisurely circuit through Hungary, Slovakia, and back to Sopron. We had no problems. PM me if I can be of more help. |
Thailand and Costa Rica are the two places I normally hear about. Personally, I get all mine done in Costa Rica, but I have a house there, so I'm there a bit more than most other places.

My husband had a whole mouth reconstruction done in Tijuana, Mexico and wrote a fairly well-regarded internet article about it. It has been awhile now, but the job has held up very well, and he's still very happy. I'll try to find a link to his article. Maybe I should have put it on my own website in the first place.
OK, here it is: http://www.kuro5hin.org/story/2003/12/20/121018/65 This website is fairly chaotic and is not as well moderated as flyertalk but if you ignore the noise and focus on the signal you'll get the idea.

South Africa?
Judging by the number of advertisements I see around the airport at JNB and in the in-flight magazine of SAA, I gather that South Africa is popular for this. I also know that a large proportion of my excellent prosthodontist's patients are foreigners.
Makes sense since we have the two pre-requisites of a medical treatment destination: a very high standard of medical education and a weak currency. Weaker by the day lately! :( |
Try Estonia. Prices are as affordable as in Asia and work quality at least as good. This one is located at the local World Trade Center in Tallinn http://www.citymed.ee/index.php just one of many.
The airport is practically in the city, you can walk to town from there! Almost as convenient as Kai Tak. |
I have an EXCELLENT dentist in Seattle. She is right downtown. Open Monday to Thursday. I referred someone who got $3k worth of work done and was very happy. PM me if you're interested. Also, Seattle is a very cool place to vacation. You could even pop up to Vancouver to see the colonies.

I also doubt any licensed dentist in the US can compete with BKK (or some of the Eastern European countries mentioned) on price. |
Hey man, if you want to get your teeth done in the third world country by all means have at it. I'm sure it would beat the UK price and thats what the OP wanted. You get what you pay for. Plus, how the hell are you going to go to a live Seahawks game in Thailand?
