I think the vast majority of countries have taxis are not equipped with the cages, in fact I would guess that there are many in the US that are not that way.

Many place I have been right after being picked up the taxi goes to the gas station, gets a partial advance for enough fuel to get you to the destination and then drives you to where you are going.

Steel cages, ...? You mean to separate the driver from the passengers? Or do you mean roll bars? Or a place to put your chickens on the roof?

How many countries have taxies that essentially ARE steel cages with wheels, a bench or something to sit on or at least hang on to and an engine out of some old motorcycle or something attached?

Except for a few major cities in the US (such as NYC), most of those that I've been to do not have the steel bars!

Sounds like the OP's taxi was actually a police car. I've been in taxis that were former police cruisers - but not active ones.

subscribing: did the taxi driver fit you with a pair of shiny bracelets before taking you to the Graybar Hotel?

There are a bunch of Taxis here in Beijing that don't have them. I think its the driver's choice whether to have them or not. I prefer them not to have cages since it cuts down on leg space for the person who is sitting behind the driver.

Well, 3.9/4 cabs I'm in don't have cages. Here in the Midwest, we're just more trusting, I guess.
