Thai Coup?

Just in on CNN: word is that tanks have rolled through the streets of Bangkok and are demanding that the police at the presidential palace stand down.

Thai PM declares "severe" state of emergency, and moved his address to the UN up to tonight so he can return immediately.

Anyone in BKK have an update?

i wonder if the military will take control of BKK..

It has been reported on the news that the ba flight due for departure at 10 from LHR is still going ahead as normal.

but if the military were to take control of the airport midflight would it turn back

Nothing new

Coups are nothing new to Thailand. The past decade or so is abnormal in that there have been few/no coups until now.

The coups are generally carried out in the name of the revered monarch and are generally not too bloody (or at least no bloody repression that comes about later as in Argentina and Chile among other places).

If they just take over the cities, is it a coup de ville?

Yikes! This would have added some suspense to my Thailand trip had it happened in January.

Peace, Thais.

Maybe because it's 3AM and they don't have any idea what's going on either. By all indications, flights were arriving and taking off as normal.
