What is that feeling one gets the day of flying?
deja vu |
Remember the feeling you would get walking into the worst class in high school, the one that seemed to go on forever?
That is the feeling I get when I travel for business. Remember the feeling you got when you were 6 or 7 the night before Christmas? That is the feeling I get when I travel for fun. |
I believe the medical term is Ascendus excitis. ;)

Usually, I love the adventure of the unknown vacation destination, but I just loath the airport anymore. Hartsfield is large and unpredictable. When I see a huge back up in security I get so nervous that I will miss the plane, I just don't act like the professional I am. Feel like a kid.
|
Before the flight, mostly annoyance at travel preparation and getting into the plane in time. The time for excitement is more when arriving at a new or favorite destination, preferably with a free weekend ahead.
First class on highspeed trains is a better travel form to actually enjoy the getting there part. |
For me it's frustration. I'm frustrated that now when I make it to my destination, I have to wait an extra 15-40 minutes because I had to check my bag in. I liked walking off the plane with my bag and feeling that the traveling is pretty much done and the work (or play) can begin. Hanging around waiting for a bag is a huge waste of time.
Last week on a mci-las trip, I timed the wait. From the time I got off the plane in las to the time I had my bag in my hand was 32 minutes. On the return into mci, it was 24. |
On Monday it is Oh crap where am I going this week. On Friday it's yippie going home.
|
I get a sense of excitment when I'm actually trying to do one of two things:
(1) Get bumped on an oversold flight or (2) On the waitlist for an upgrade on a long flight (1) is a little more exciting than (2) because you don't really know how things pan out until right before or after boarding. Feels a little like Vegas. Unfortunately, I haven't picked up a bump since early 2005. |
I agree with the first post: it's a mixture of nervousness, excitement and unease... that makes me go to the toilet! I'm not afraid of flying at all, even if it's a business trip I quite enjoy all the hustle and bustle, but I can't help it. But it's OK aftwerwards.
What I hate the most is the fear of missing connecting flights. For instance, next month I'm flying from Barcelona to Shanghai via Helsinki, and I'll only have 45 minutes inbetween. It worries me every time I think of it. |
I have 1 or 2 flights a week every week, so I really don't get anxious or anything.

Tired. My flights usually leave early morning, and I live about an hour away from the airport. Figuring in the two-hours-before-takeoff rule, this means waking up as early as 3:00AM, or more frequently, not sleeping at all. :td:
Once I'm at the airport, though, I'm rejuvenated. I love being in airports and airplanes. Doubly so if I'm in F or C. |
Nervousness and excitement. I usually fly long haul ex SYD so the trip is always a long one but these days I try and fly J as i simply loath Y.
I always write a list out the night out and triple check it before I leave home and double check my hand luggage. Normally i have an early morning departure so i don't spend most of the day in suspended anxiety! Once the plane leaves the runway I am much more settled and that 8am Champayne alwys does the trick. |
I love to fly, and almost always fly, with Hunki, in first or business, where I feel relaxed, comfortable and even pampered. I also look forward with great anticipaton to new adventures, so, the bottom line is, flying for me is just a wonderful and exciting experience.
Even with crowds and delays, there is always something to reward and enjoy if we just look for it. |
Claustrophobia
I expect it will be bad and wonder if my Xanax will help me when they shut the cabin door and move out to the tarmac and sit there for hours without an excuse or reason. As I sit trapped in my small economy class window seat. |
