Flights on YY airline?
I've seen a few listings for YY airline (= the generic IATA code) on Expertflyer. Why are these listed? What do they mean? Where can I book them? For example, YLAP6M on YY from TPE-PDX:
Code:
FARE BASIS CODE |
YY means you can fly that segment on any carrier that fly's that route.

But that wasn't my original question. There is a $1400 Y fare TPE-PDX on YY. Can I call up any airline and say "I want that fare" -- even though it's cheaper than their own Y fare? I think not. So why is this fare listed, and what can I do with it? |

So why is this fare listed, and what can I do with it? Also, remember: YY fares are not always fully flexible. I have seem some YY fares that don't allow any changes to the ticket after purchase. Therefore, if you are looking for a full Y class fare, a YY fare may not be your answer. In the fare rules posted above, there is a minumum stay of 4 days. If you wanted to stay less, you wouldn't be able to use it. I have attatched the fare rules of a YY fare between LHR-YYZ for comparison. As you can see, it has quite a lot of restrictions. Code:
(Unknown carrier YY) YY LONYTO YKWAP fare rules and restrictions Cheers |

Waking up an old thread...
I want to fly LAX -> PRG; OSL -> BOS in the summer. Since I collect CO miles, I am interested in routing the outbound through one of LHR (on VS), AMS (on KL), or CDG (on AF) and then connecting to PRG on OK. One of the cheapest fares for this slightly odd routing, found during searches on ITA, is a YY fare, fare basis YHXAN1ME for LAX-PRG, which allows the LHR connection. These fares are mysterious to me, so I'm hoping someone knows the answer to the following question. Question: ITA books this fare on VS and OK in Q class. Why does it use Q class and not Y class? Is this specified in some IATA table, or does it just use the lowest fare class available (so if I want a higher fare class, I should just wait?)? How do I find out what booking classes IATA fares like this one book into on different carriers? Anyone know? I'd love it if these fares could book in Y, since the elite qualifying bonus miles for full Y would be hefty. But I'd settle for just understanding what booking class these fares do use. |

Good point. It appears that Q is it for this fare on VS; well, it was a nice idea...
