You don't get chocolates on your pillow at home at night? What kind of conditions do you live in?

Good point. I just told my wife I would like her to begin providing this amenity to me nightly. Surprisingly she was less than enthused.

No; it's an "fancy hotel" thing. Limited-service business hotels and cheap and mid-priced tourist places won't have it; for full-service business oriented places, it's hit or miss, and luxury places almost always will.

There may also be some which don't generally offer it, but will do it if asked, and many if not most will do some subset of it on request. I tent to avoid places that are fancy enough to offer it, but (for example) just about anyplace if I shower after work before going out for the evening, I can call housekeeping and have them swap out the towels while I'm out. Similarly, a lot of the places in Asia I stay will leave the fancier pillows and bed runner in the closet after the first night rather than replacing them on the bed each day.

It's a nice service. Much less creepy if you're out of the room while they do it. Less so if you have servants at home.

Maybe hotels should have an option where you can let them know whether you are playing princess at the tea party this weekend or whether you just want to quietly enjoy yourself without pretending to be something you saw in a movie.
That option is called the 'do not disturb' sign or button.

I love eating the chocolates from both pillows and pretending to my husband that they didn't leave any this time. Those rascals!

The service as such is appreciated.

The revival of an old thread OTOH is worthy of a turndown
