One time I remembered to ask in Switzerland and the guy smiled and declined.

Been there about 10 times and no stamp!!

I always ask when traveling with my little, 12 year old brother. Don't think they ever declined it, so I have a couple of European stamps. However, I'm traveling in Europe with a European passport...

Would anyone perhaps know if a two hour layover in AMS (EDI-AMS-JFK) is long enough to go through immigration and reenter to get a stamp in my US passport?

Amsterdam

Two hours should be plenty of time based on my experiences. I've pulled something analogous at BRU.

As far as stamping at AMS, once the immigration official made a snide remark along the lines of "do all Americans collect stamps" when I asked for an exit stamp. Another time, the jolly officer asked why I couldn't stay longer and then gave me a stamp without asking. I'm not sure if they have a consistent policy, but I think I've always ended up with a stamp at Schiphol.

I haven't always ended up with a stamp at AMS -- that is, I've got a good number of exits from the Schengen zone via AMS where my passport has not been stamped -- including once last week and twice last month.

Likewise, except I haven't been through AMS this year.

Thanks! Even if I don't get a stamp, I can at least get a breath of fresh air, and it's not like I'll have anything better to do during that time...

It's been years ago, but when I went to the Soviet Union (I didn't go through Intourist, I went through a ministry department) they stamped a piece of paper and then removed it when I left. No stamp on the passport itself. Cambodia affixes an adhesive stamp to your passport with hard written details on it.

I was in Cambodia this month, and used their e-Visa service. Even though the website said that no stamp would be made, I still got one (and an exit stamp too), and it had a space for the immigration officer to write in the e-Visa number.

I think I had to pay a $40 or $50 fee to get into Cambodia and some amount to get out. I found it interesting, but the military fellow in charge went around and collected the funds, since it had to be cash, and put them in his pocket. Nice fringe benefit. ;-)

I've gotten a US Entry stamp on my "Contact Information" page from a US Passport Control agent. I was very unhappy with this...but what can you do?

Hm, USD 25 for me for the e-Visa, and another USD 25 airport departure tax, payable by cash or Visa/MC. I chose the credit card option. Nobody pocketed any cash from me and I haven't seen any fraudulent charges on the card :)

OT: REP is a really nice-looking little airport. Beats the heck out of a lot of US airports.

Cambodia visa was $20 when I went last year. Used a full page sticker.

Yep. The e-Visa costs USD 5 extra.

Not any more. Just a regular stamp (and full page visa of course).
