Y-UP fares?

WCBS TV just aired a segment on flying first for the price of coach

Search for a first class fare, and look for a YUP fare (or as they said, other fares that are higher letters of the alaphabet, then the word UP)

They are saying you get a first class fare for en economy price.

Dallas to St Louis - Yup $278

Not a clue if it works or not, but it's what they said

It read more like a release for farecompare then news....

United has Y-UP fares. Can't speak for the other airlines. But Y-UPs (IIRC) are usually close to (or are) full Y fares (which can be expensive), not discounted fares.

Cheers.

Farecompare.com has a section on Y-up/Q-up with instructions on how to search for it on the various airlines. I've had little success with it, though. I am on a flight which is one of these, and it saved me about $200 over other airlines. Not complaining, but not hundreds of dollars as the stories pitch either!

Isn't a $200 savings hundreds of dollars?

Guess the caffeine hasn't hit me yet. :)
I meant to convay that the articles I've seen indicate you'll get what is closer to a "coach" ticket, and the fare was still about twice that even though it was a couple of hundred lower than the other airlines comparable fares.

Keep in mind a 'Y' fare is a full fare with few restrictions. This means you will pay a hefty price for this fare even though it is an economy fare. A 'Y' fare under $300 is doubtful, the reality is you are looking at spending $800 or more domestically.

Search the UA MP forum for info on Qup fares. As others have stated they are discounted F fares. Just don't expect a discounted F fare to compare in price with an economy class fare, i.e., have realistic expectations.

Also note the difficulties some people have with these during irregular ops.

At times in the past, my impression is that "A" fares on some airlines have been similar to "YUP" and "BUP" fares on other airlines. At times these have been described as discounted F fares and at other times, as coach fares which allow you to sit in the F section. I seem to remember reading a thread in which someone on one of these fares was denied an F seat; I don't remember the resolution, but I think the bottom line was that an F seat is not guaranteed on these fares.

The other issue is that sometimes there are discounted F fares that are lower in price than a Y-UP. It pays to shop carefully!

That makes more sense. The story pretty much said pay as little as anybody in coach was but ride in first, pretty much implying it was super dsicount fares.

Y-UP, Q-UP, A or Z fares. Depends on the airlines. They're either economy seats that book into first class, or discounted first seats.

Here's some information from FareCompare:

Some very cheap Y and YUP fares do indeed exist; refer to this post by rosj.
