Yeah, god forbid anyone mind their own business. Is it also my fault when I'm keeping to myself doing work on an airplane and people are trying to read my documents or what's going on on my laptop?

Maybe the mother should have been woken up so she could teach her son a lesson about the rudeness of spying on other people.

Don't correct the kid now, and he'll grow up to be the guy who is looking over your shoulder when you're reading documents or typing away on your laptop on the airplane, or eavesdropping on your private, quiet conversation with your seatmate. And, of course, by that point, he'll say it's your fault that he's spying on you, and probably believe it, too.

If you want him to stop, just make it obvious your watching, and stick one hand in your pants.... If you Female this may not have the desired affect...

Several people are implying that it's the mother's fault for being asleep. C'mon folks... you have a 10-yr-old and you cannot sleep at any time for fear that he will suddenly wake up and see something that shouldn't be on the airplane in the first place?

Let's say you call UA 1000 times and ask if it's ok to view porn onboard. How many "yes" answers do you think you'll get?

I am sure that the agents in India doesn't have this scenario on their prepared scripts. Wanna try and call what they say?

A Twist

I was on a flight a couple months back (transcon in F) and the guy next to me had his laptop open for most of the flight. I was watching the IFE and occasionally had glimpses of his monitor (unintentional, it was at least a 17” screen and impossible to miss, particularly when you’re angled to watch the little screen). His name and company name were shown in huge print on top of some of the emails he was working on. I was into my movie, no problem. He then seemed to put his work away (laptop was still on) and started opening some pictures, renaming the files and filing them in appropriate directories. I saw it was porn and didn’t really care, but I did think it was pretty rude and stupid, particularly given his name, etc had been so clearly on the screen moments earlier, but not my problem. That was until his pictures seemed to have an effect on the guy, and he was shifting around slightly, pulling the blanket up higher on his lap and the hand was moving down and under the blanket with clear intention, accompanied by the other hand above the blanket. No way was I going to sit there for that, so I popped my seat up to reach for my shoes so I could take a walk and get out of there. He seemed to get the message, closed up his stuff and took a walk to the bathroom himself before my shoes were on. He left the laptop turned off for the rest of the flight.

Not sure what I would've done if he didn't take the walk at that time but I was and still am seriously grossed out by this guy and the situation.

Okay, that is a twist. Anything I said before implying that one should have perspective, not be Puritanical, etc. did not extend to touching anyone, including oneself. Very different situation and you handled it very well, probably better than I would have.

And by the way. did the perp perv keep telling people that he was Global Services?

It's not as if...

It was just lez action; good for a young man to learn from an early age that a female enjoys mouth action; his future partner(s) will thank him for it.

It's not as if the movie was about gay cowboys or something equally vile

Exclamation

I'd have nudged the guy then said in a whisper in his ear "Mind you, theres a little kid behind us." He would've just shut the thing off or just turned it. Simple remedy.

It's the mother's fault for raising an ill-mannered brat. Passengers have no responsibility for ensuring other people's children behave themselves.

Most likely, the answer you get will be, "We have no policy about what you can and cannot watch." However, if we follow your assertion to its logical conclusion, no one will be able to watch anything but G-rated pablum. Suppose the mother of this kid not only objects to porn, but also to explicit violence. Well, I'd better not watch that "Gangs of New York" video I just got -- might be some kid somewhere that can catch a glimpse. And what about blasphemy? I guess Defending Your Life is out.

No, you miss the point: You have a kid, it's your responsibility to meter what the kid sees. You take the kid out in public, you have no expectation that other people are going to watch your kid for you and make sure everything he is exposed to complies with your moral code.

No airline to my knowledge has a rule or contract provision in the CoC about what movies passengers may or may not watch.

There's probably nothing specific in the CoC about masturbation either. The airlines probably have a general acceptable behavior clause that covers stuff like this. They certainly have something about obeying flight attendants...

As to the kid, lots of people would think there was something wrong with him if he didn't try to get a peek.

"Red eight plays on black nine"

I certainly can't imagine any situation in which someone sitting behind a laptop user could see what's on the laptop unless they stood up and looked over the top of the seat, or leaned sideways and forward and tried to peer through the space between the seats. In other words, it takes an affirmative effort on the part of the "lookee."
Doing that is rude.
Thank you. This whole thread remind me of a funny comment that I read while shopping for a 3M privacy filter (when your seatmate reminds you that "red eight plays on black nine") http://www.amazon.com/gp/cdp/member-...Fencoding=UTF8

It is sad that in order use my laptop on airplane without having to worry about loss of confidentiality, I have to spend $40 or more for one of these screens. Even if first, I've looked up to find my seatmates staring at my screen (and no, I'm not watching porn). Like many industries, the one I work in doesn't allow for loss of confidentiality.

I wonder how often this kind of thing happens ex-US? I'll bet that it happens more often. Who is at fault for "corrupting the child?"

1) The child shouldn't have been staring (yes, staring is considered rude in most countries).

2) The parents who haven't informed their children that staring is rude (or whose children follow by example).

3) That said, it is somewhat inconsiderate of the pax to be completely oblivious of his surroundings and the possible ramifications of his actions. I'm sure that most people here try to observe local customs when travelling, and "do as the Romans do". The porn-watcher should have been aware that, when flying in a more puritanical country, watching porn on the laptop in close proximity to others probably won't be well received.

If this would have been on a flight from CDG to somewhere in Scandinavia it would never have made it into a flyertalkdotcom post. People would have been amused instead of offended.

p.s. american FlyerTalkers: can you do something like the superbowl nippleslip again? The nipple itself wasn't that interesting (we see titloads of those on public tv networks 24/7), but the public outcry that followed was a source of entertainment for europeans that lasted for weeks!
