DC to LAX
 

Whats the best way for me to start earning miles for my trip from DC to LAX.

I found airfare from $290 to $300. Good deal?

Let me know suggestions.

As for the 290-300 fare you found, if that's inclusive of taxes & if its on the dates you want (during Thanksgiving? I'm making that assumption from your TravelBuzz thread - which is what I believe Fiumicino is referring to) and you feel comfortable paying it, then I think its a fine fare.

Generally, transcontinental fares start around 220 inclusive of taxes unless there's a fare sale going on. If you're getting 290-300 fares for Thanksgiving, I would suggest booking it - if the flights go down in price for your same flights, most airlines will issue you a credit for the difference for the EXACT same flights. However, if the prices go up, you don't have to pay additional fares...that said, 300 for a transcontinental Thanksgiving fare isn't too bad.

How does one claim that credit if there is a drop in fare for the same class of service on the same flight after one has booked and paid the higher fare? UA has its "lowest fare guarantee," but the LFG does not pertain to this. And for the LFG, which is supposed to refund you the difference between what you paid through united.com and what you could find elsewhere on the internet plus a $50 cert, you must find the lower fare and make your claim that same day.

AA doesn't do that any longer without a change fee on domestic flights. I suspect other airlines might have a similar policy.

With UA you can claim the difference online (for reservations also bought online);

you go in "My itineraries",
select "change itinerary",
"more options" and
"You can also check the price of the itinerary"

To the OP -

Based on the information in your post, this is not a good deal. Airfares right now are $178 (US, AirTran, ATA, Frontier, and AmericaWest). Since you don't seem to care when you go or on what airline, why spend an additional $112 to $122?

Most mileage runners have a limited number of airlines that they collect mileage in, and want to confine their mileage runs to those airlines. If that is the case with you, it would be helpful if you told us what airlines you want to consider, so we don't waste our time researching fares on airlines you don't want to fly. Ditto with specific dates.

Everyone thanks for replying back to me.

I will be traveling from Oct.6 (not flexible) thru Oct.15 (I can leave the 14th if needed). I am flexible with any airline. But would prefer to leave out of DCA or IAD.

Since you're looking for specific itinerary help, which isn't really allowed in this forum, I'm going to move this to TravelBuzz.

itsme - as for your question, I believe Fiumicino helped answer it - I believe once the price goes down, you can also call UA reservations. I've only had to do this once & it was on NW and they did not charge me any sort of change fee at the time - they issued me a credit for the difference.
