Travel Insurance

My medical insurance is invalid outside the US. When I have travelled to Europe in the past for leisure, I have purchased a policy to cover me. I haven't done so in a while and can't find the name of the company I used.

I came up with many options and selected 2 based on a minimal degree of familiarity. The first is a program I have available as a business traveller. I am entitled to a 20% discount as a leisure traveller. I think it's called SOS or Travel Assist. The second is offered by American Express. SOS was twice the price and 1/4 the coverage, so I went with AmEx.

Anyone want to inflict me with buyer's remorse (or support my decision)? Either way, let's hope I don't need it.

Thanks. I remember now - it was Medex. Rate was comparable to same coverage with AmEx.

Medex?

I use to go with AmEx's insurance but they only provide 1 month of coverage and I am going to be out of the country for 2 months. Waste of money to only have half the vacation covered.

I saw a number of options, incluing one for expatriates. Since we'll be gone for a week, I have coverage for the entire period.

Travel Insurance

I have a question about the travel insurance too. If I insure my trip and I have to cancel it, what happens to the airline tickets? Let's say that my trip is worth $2000 total for 2 people, $500 for air and $500 for hotel each. So if we have to cancel due to emergency illness then I should call and cancel my flights and notify the hotel.

Our tickets are non-refundable and issued in our names. If I am reimbursed by the insurance company then what happens to my airline ticket? Do I still own it and pay the fee to re-issue the ticket for another trip or do I have to turn the ticket over to the insurance? Will the insurance company let me "double dip"?

www.insuremytrip.com has more options and is easier for me to understand.

This would be something you would want to clarify with the insurance company. In my experience, if the insurance company pays you for non-refundable tickets then the tickets become their property (unusable). It could be that if you find you would be able to use the tickets, they would cover the change penalty involved. But to allow you to "double dip", that would be fraud.

Thanks for the reply, I think it would be easier for me to insure just the land portion of my trip as I have up to one year to re-book with the airlines.
