I love watching tv shows on train rides. I haven't travelled anywhere exciting on the train and would love to. Oh, I did one. I just remembered. It was the Royal Hudson steam train from Vancouver (I think) to squamish in the fancy diner cabin. I recall we had salmon. Of course!

yes, Royal Hudson (Vancouver-Squamish and return) was spectacular

we also enjoyed the Caledonian sleeper from London to Aberdeen

My first Eurostar ride was the most enjoyable.

I took El Chepe from Chihuahua to Posada Barrancas in October 2018. No problems anywhere, save for unreliable transport from Posada Barrancas to Creel.

Not terribly recent, but my dad and I took El Chepe from Los Mochis all the way to Chihuahua in May 2009, at the height of the Swine Flu scare and not long after the death of a DEA agent in Chihuahua, IIRC. We had no issue apart from getting sick (not sure why since I was careful about avoiding the tap water). I’m glad we went when we did, since from Google Street View it looks a lot more built up at Divisadero (the summit where we spent the night). Plan for the train to be hours late by the end of the trip though.

My favorite so far has been either that or the Empire Builder through Marias Pass in Montana. (We rode all the way from Whitefish to Chicago, but the first couple hours near Glacier National Park was he highlight by far.)

It was awhile ago, but my all-time list is topped by the Jungfraubahn, a journey we started in Grindelwald, Switzerland. For those who have never taken this journey, this site has some nice pictures: https://www.seat61.com/jungfrau.htm

747FC , thanks for bringing it up with the link

Been on a number of enjoyable train rides , this too must have been one of my most enjoyable ones .
First time back in ‘ 74 , done a couple of times since .

Also the one from Oslo to Bergen .
Twice - once in autumn / winter ‘ 78 . And other summer of ‘ 92 ?

Vancouver to Banff was fun , rather spectacular at parts .. :)

Probably my favorite was taking a R/T Eurostar between London and Paris. There's just something about being able to take a train from an island nation to the European continent via an undersea tunnel. The train from Paris to Bayeux was enjoyable too.

Without doubt the Orient Express from Venice to London. Fantastic food all cooked on board including fresh lobster brought on in Paris. Excellent service, one steward per carriage who look after you like Royalty, the fun of dressing for dinner and the ultimate luxury.

More reasonably priced, the Bernina Express train from Tirano in Northern Italy to St Moritz, up the street out of Italy, climbing up the steep mountain side on the steepest non fernicular railway in the work I think, then across glacier country and into St Moritz.

Even more reasonable, Rome/Naples to Sicily. Down the west coast of Italy With stunning sea views, then being shunted onto the ferry in your carriage, climbing out and watching the short crossing from the deck, joining again and travelling to Catania. A 10 hour journey, no catering, but almost unique.

Flew back BA though!!

Tourist style... The Cumbres & Toltec Scenic Railway (Chama NM to Antonito CO)

Passenger - The Ghan from Adelaide to Alice Springs...First Class sleeper.....

Longest - Chicago to Sacramento on AMTRAKs California Zephyr. Not up to the comfort of the Ghan.. (nor anywhere near the cost!) but a very relaxing trip....in the basic sleeper...

I am planning to have the Switzerland train tour during Christmas holidays. I am so excited to take a look at the beautiful mountains and towns.

August, 2016. The Indian Pacific from Perth to Sydney. I had graduated law school in May and then taken the Bar Exam in July. My dad and I decided to do this as a graduation trip. I had spent the summer driving for Uber, inspecting vehicles for an insurance company, pet sitting and a ton of other gig economy jobs while also studying so flying QR business class and then taking a luxury sleeper across Australia felt earned more than most trips have. The service was incredible as were the accommodations and we saw so much of the country. I also got back on Friday night and on Monday morning found out I'd passed the bar exam which wrapped up the trip perfectly.

You can even read about it here if you would like to: https://www.flyertalk.com/forum/trip...get-there.html

Coast Starlight Express Santa Barbara (or start from Burbank or San Diego) to Seattle with a double bed sleeper cabin (about 40 hours). I did this in March, but would recommend after May because you follow the coast and it was getting dark around 18:00 in March.

The Alaska Railroad from Anchorage to Denali National Park. It was about an 8 hour ride through some of the most beautiful scenery. I just hung out between cars so I could stick my head out, but there was a nice observation car, dining car, etc.

Glacier Express from Zermatt to St Moritz and also the previously mentioned Bernia From St Moritz to Tirano Italy.
Gornergrat Train from Zermatt up the mountain for great views of the Matterhorn (world's first fully electric cog railway, yeah its a steep climb).

I would love to hear from anyone that has done The Rocky Mountaineer Vancouver to Lake Louise/Banff) and how to compares to Bernina or Glacier Express.

I’m booked on AKRR from Seward to Anchorage next spring - I imagine that’ll become my new favorite afterwards.
