Wait - you're flying from Canada to Canada by way of LHR? Good question, but my guess would be yes, you will need a passport.

Most airlines simply will not let you on the flight without one because they don't want the risk of you trying to enter the UK without the required documents (a passport), which would cost them a pretty hefty fine. Never mind that you have a ticket straight back to Canada and plan to transit airside, this is a little too crazy for most airlines to imagine.

P.S. Mileage run?

P.P.S. Did you mean YYT as in St. Johns or YYZ as in Toronto?

well.... im non reving all flights going west from yyt are cancelled due to the snow and tomorrow is booked but i can go through lhr to get to where i want to go final destination is ywg.

just dont have time to get a passport now

From what's been mentioned, in this situation you will not be allowed to travel overseas without a passport or other documentation permitting international travel. In the absence of such passport/documentation -- even if you don't have to clear immigration/customs at LHR (which you don't have to for transits) -- you won't be permitted to board the flights you wish because:

1) the airline will not allow you to check-in/board; and
2) the UK will hold the airline accountable for failing to supply APIS-type information from a passport or other documentation serving a similar purpose.

No passport, no go.

you will need a passport. AC won't let you board without a one.

well damn it.....
thx for your replys

Passports are required for identifying people coming into another country (Passport Control). Customs Control is for paying money for for certain goods brought into another country or for preventing certain goods from being brought into another country (ie drugs, guns etc).

Wait a sec - if you're non-reving, are you an AC employee? Then you might be able to swing something with them based on your employee status. Otherwise, don't hold your breath.

AFAIK, airline crew need to be listed on the crew manifest for the flight and arrive at immigration/customs in their uniform. Then their airline ID (which will, without fail, have a picture on it) is checked against the manifest immigration/customs received for the flight and they're allowed through without having to show further identification.

The keys are to be listed on the manifest and to be in uniform. Otherwise, they will still need their passports or other acceptable travel documents.

From close observation at US INS/Customs in Honolulu:

I've observed that even crew _HAD_ to have passports even while in airline uniform and have ID badges. I watched my plane's crew go through the airline crew queue line and all of them had presented passports (and working papers.)

Well, we all know US immigration to be incredibly anal.

My previous post was based on what I've seen at airports elsewhere in the world, most notably SIN, ZRH and FRA.

Non-NonRev Feb 25, 2006 4:00 pm

It's possibble that at some airports, although the crew members must have their passports on their person (to show if demanded), their company ID matched against the manifest is deemed sufficient for getting them through the immigration checkpoint.

Since the names on the manifests would be provided by an airline central staffing office, someone with forged ID and stolen uniform should still not be able to sneak on board, right?

All should be ok now AC has a 763 doing yyt-yyz tomorrow should be able to get on that to get through to YWG.. alot better than the yyt-lhr-yow-ywg that i was going to do :D
but again thanks for your replys

Generally all crew need to carry passports. Some airlines even go as far as to require crew to carry passports at all times, no matter if they're flying domestic or international.

Whether they need to use them all the time or not is another matter.
